1996 Odometer Fix Question

Short version is current odometer stopped when I pushed the re-set it for a trip. The speedo still works. First question – is the odometer fixable?
But . . .
I have an instrument panel, with a tachometer, I want to install. But the odometer in that panel is very far off. Next question – is the odometer (if I can fix it) swapable from my original panel to the one with the tach?

This is on a 1996 Ranger, 2.3, 5-sp

Thank you for your input

Yes, odometer often had the worm gear fail

Google: Ford Ranger worm gear replacement

Also read article here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tec...r-replacement/

If your worm gear looks undamaged then the electric motor is the most likely issue, so it will need to be swapped out

That is great info – thank you.

Next question: on eBay there is a “Heavy Duty / Upgraded Odometer Worm Gear” with a Lifetime Warranty, unknown brand for $16. I have a message out to the seller asking; What makes this gear Heavy Duty / Upgraded?

Or there is a Dorman Odometer Trip Meter Worm Gear for $33.

Any thoughts on which one may be a better option?

Thank you for your input

Follow up on the message out to the seller of the “Heavy Duty / Upgraded Odometer Worm Gear” asking; What makes this gear Heavy Duty / Upgraded?

The answer:

“It is made from a different composite that does not shatter or crack.”
