1999 Ford Ranger

I just bought a 1999 Ranger with the intent to use for parts for my 2001 Ranger. It has been wrecked on the front left side, but since it has a 4-cylinder and a manual 5-speed manual transmission I have decided to get it on the road again, saving my other ranger a few miles over the next few years I have left here on this world. Don't get me wrong, I love my 2001, but got about 215,000 miles on her and thought getting this 1999 going on the road again it would be be easier on gas since my 2001 has a 4.0 liter engine. Don't know for sure what the size of engine that is in the 1999, but I do know it has a 4-cylinder engine.
I noticed that my '99 had fancy rear light lenses, I thought I might just swap them out and put them on my '01. Figuring it would take long to do this, I proceeded, but to my surprise the rear light lenses had three (3) light sockets instead of the standard tow (2) like my '01. Could someone give me a little heads up on why there are 3 instead of 2 on this '99?
As always, I appreciate any and all help.

I believe the 99 had a separate light (amber) for the turn signals, while the 01 would be all red, sharing a bulb for brake lights. In other words, both have 1 bulb for reverse lights, but the 99 has 2 additional (one for brake, one for turn) while the 01 only has an additional 1 (shared brake and turn).
