2.3 rattle

I have a 1997 ranger 2.3 55k that I purchased that had sat around for awhile.Ran at idle but had no power. I found that both rockers were off and laying under the cam on cyl 4 and 1 on cyl one.I swaped out the head with a very low mileage engine head that also had sat for a long while. When I fired it up it had a rattle sounds like maybe top end so I swaped in the low mileage used engine fired it up and still has the same rattle.I have not let it run but a few seconds due to the noise. Does anyone know if this is normal for a 2.3 that has sat awhile if so will it clear up after running? Or if there may be another reason why it is doing this? the orig engine made no noise before I swaped out the head. I have worked on these engines before but I am stumped and frustrated with this. Please help!
