HOW TO WIRE A TACH ON COIL PACKS

Can anyone help me out. I cant find the wire that controls the rpm signal for the tach. The tach instructions say "front of engine drivers side / tan wire yellow stripe" . ANY IDEAS?

the tach wont work right if you hook em straight to the coil packs. try looking on the firewall in the big bunch of wires runing into the cab. also helps if you give us a little info about your truck

Wire it to the tan/yellow which can be found in several places.
  • the back of the instrument cluster
  • pin 4 of the PCM
  • in the tachometer service connector to the rear of the battery

You are just the man I'm looking for! I need to know the best place to run my after-market tach signal wire for my 1999 Ranger V6 4.0 L Supercab 2WD. I did exactly what you said woudln't work right by wiring to the coil pack and you are 100% correct! I only got partial deflection on the tach! What color wire should I be looking for and where should I look for it?

Regards; Wilson

it is a tan wire with a yellow stripe. But my truck is a '94 . i found that wire in a cluster of wires coming through the fire wall on a round connector maybe 2-3 inches in diameter right near the parking brake good luck. I also got a small deflection on the tach, until i switched it from 8 to 4 cylinders on the back of the tach

Tan/yellow. It runs from the PCM (passenger side firewall), across the engine harness to the firewall bulkhead connector on the driver side and then through the firewall and up to the back of the instrument cluster in the dash. The easiest place to pick it up in the interior is in the large bundle of wires under the dash next to the P-brake pedal.

Configure your aftermarket tach for 6 cylinders per the instructions and you should be set.

Thanks a bunch, guys! It's always comforting when more than one person comes back with the same answer! Tan with a yellow stripe! I'll search that out and get back to you with the results! Wilson

If its a 99 I know you can just swap in an ENTIRE cluster that has a tach and it works. Its what I did in my '00. Just found a cluster at the junk yard and was very lucky to get one within 2k miles of my tuck, but if not you can open one of those up and swap out odo's real easy. Looks less tacky then a tach on the steering column
