Heat/AC acting

Heat/AC acting
Howdy,
Got a question on a 98 4.0L regular cab 4x2 ranger. The AC/Heat acts REALLY weird. If we put it on Max A/C and turn it all the way cold, the A/C works great, but if you move the red/blue selector at all from all the way cold it runs hot air full blast. If you set it to anything other than Max A/C it runs full hot air no matter what you set the wheel to.
SO, here's the question: Has anyone hit this sort of problem before? Should I start looking for a Vacuum leak? Bad blend door? Bad dash switch?
I'm mechanically apt thanks to keeping my XJ driving, but TOTALLY unfamiliar with Rangers (it's the wife's).
Thanks all!
Side note: The heater takes unusually long to warm up, but it appears the engine does as well. Not sure if it's some sort of thermostat issue or if it could be related to the above but it seemed worth mentioning.
