226 code, poor fuel mileage

Looking for some help, 92 ranger with 4.0 getting less than 15 mpg, replaced the plugs and wires and o2 sensor, also seems to be using oil, runs fine but uses gas like crazy and check engine light is intermittent, but code 226 comes up for idm circuit, not sure what to do with that and can that he my fuel issue?

Yes, code 226 means the computer is not getting a good timing pulse from the EDIS module, spark module, or could be bad feedback from coil pack
Without that signal computer is just guessing when to open fuel injectors, it is a Batch Fire setup so not a big big deal, but MPG can suffer

You will have an EDIS-6 module on the Rad support

Picture here of all the parts for the spark system on 1990-1994 Ranger 4.0l: EDIS-6Large.jpg Photo by BRAAPZ | Photobucket
There is the Tone ring behind the crank pulley, then the Cranks senor that sends out a pulse each time one of the teeth on the tone ring passes by
That pulse goes to the EDIS6 module, orange sticker on it
The coil pack hooks to the EDIS6

EDIS-6 has 4 wires to the computer

Wiring here: Ford EDIS technical information

And then below is a 1994 diagram that includes wiring for computer, will be same terminals on the computer in 1992
