How does push start work?

I was at the dealer and bought an 07 v8 sport trac. My salesman said the paperwork would take a few minutes so he tossed me the keys to a Taurus SHO and said have fun. (sweeeeet!)

Afterwards, it got me thinking about the Toyota accelerator problem.

My question- when you are driving, if you hit the start button does the engine turn off? It seems like either option is bad. If a kid hit the button while you were driving it could be dangerous. On the flip side, if the accelerator got stuck and you hit the button and it didn;t turn off, it would be dangerous. So which is it? There is no key. At least with the taurus sho. You have a key fob. If the key fob is in your pocket you just put the feet on the brakes and hit the button to start.

Does it take two inputs to turn it off while driving? Like have the brake pedal down when you touch the button? Even that could cause an accidental shut down.

I'm confused. Anyone have an answer?

If you push it once it goes into accessory and i think you have to hold it for it to lock the steering wheel and everything like you took the key out... What you should have done as went to a parking lot and tried it out.

i thought about it a day later. You know.....after romping on a taurus sho you don't think about the small details.

I did call my wife and told her I may be bringing it home instead of the sport trac. I didn't get yelled at. lol. I couldn;t do it though. Frickin $45,000 price tag sucks.

If i remember correctly in my friend's is250 he held the brake and tapped the button to turn on. He held the button for like 3 seconds and it turned off, but he was in park.

No need to worry FORD has the brake /gas pedal override = hit both pedals at the same time and the brakes take first choice

Some you hold fro 3sec, others you have to push it 3x.

Seems stupid, never understood the value of push button other than the "ricer attention *****" appeal of it. There's nothing intuitive about pushing a button a few times or holding it in the event of a problem.
