4WD High and 4WD Low lights flash while driving in 2WD

1999 Ranger XLT

I was driving in 2WD and the dashboard indicator lights for both the 4wd high and low flashed a couple times then stopped. This repeated several times over the course of a 20min drive. It wasnt a flicker, but seemed deliberate.

Does anyone know what this means?

TIA.

The flashing 4x4 light warning is similar to a Check Engine Light except it is for electric transfer case system. 4x4 trouble codes are not part of OBDII so they cannot be retrieved using an OBDII reader. Any code(s) would have to be pulled at a repair facility using a reader that can access modules other than the PCM.

Thanks for the info!

Is it anything to be worried about if the vehicle shifts into 4WD without any problems?

What are the possible problems that are detected by the warning system?

Electrical faults or positioning faults. Unfortunately, the transfer case shift motor and it's wiring are not the most reliable items on your truck.

It would be worthwhile to check all the fuses related to the 4WD system. On your '99 they look to be fuses 9, 10, 26, and 27 inside the cab fuse box, and fuse # 3 located in the power distribution box under the hood.

HELP!! at times when I shift into 4wheel drive it does not lock in and the 4wheel drive high and low lights flash back at me. at other times things work just fine and the low 4wheel lights up and it locks in.
could this be a faulty transfer case shift motor and wiring problem?

1959ranger reason being its doin wat its doin is cause the 4x4 sensor maybe goin out. aka the cylinoid for the 4x4 wen mine went out in my 1989 bronco i had to bang on the trans case to get it engaged and my 1993 is starting to flash at me your BEST bet is to switch it to manual 4x4 with the extra stick in the floor therefor u dnt have to wry bout all those stupid sensors/cylinoids anymore atleast thats wat i did.

I solved the same problem by cleaning the connection in the plug on the back of the transfer case. Works like new. Shift on the fly 4 hi and neutral with brake on to get in and out of 4 low.

Anybody got any tips

So I have a 99 B4000 4x4. I've got the blinking dash lights for the 4x4 indicators. So far I have been buying new components and testing to see if the new part fixes the problem and returning them when they don't. So that being said I have tested with new components, all of the vacuum lines, the electronic vacuum valve for the hubs, I can manually lock each hub using a vacuum pump, all the fuses, the relay in the dash, the 4x4 selector switch on the dash, I have checked the wiring harness from the GEM to the electronic transfer case motor and I have tried using a new transfer case motor. Nothing has fixed the problem, 4x4 still will not engage. Is there something else I should be checking?

Rims

Will 2wd rims fit a 4x4 with lock hubs? I know it’s a stupid question I’m just trying to help my brother out with his 4x4 ranger

Welcome to the forum

No, is the general answer because the center holes are too small

AND...............1998 and up 4x4 Ranger wheels won't fit 1997 and earlier 4x4's with locking hubs, so not just a 2WD 4WD thing

But measure holes to be sure
