4x4 Module Location
I own a 2008 Ranger 4x4 sport auto with 12,000 miles,today i noticed when i started my truck
it did not do the 4x4 self test with the dash lights, then i turned the 4x4 knob to 4 wh high, nothing happens no 4x4 lights no clicking sound nothing whatsoever, checked one fuse in the motor compartment and 2 fuses in kick panel all checked out OK. all harneses to shift motor OK, before i take it to the dealership,i still have my warranty is there anything else i can check where is the location of the 4x4 module and can it be reset,i also disconnected the positive side of the battery but have the same problem.Thank You. |
I say take it to the dealer thats what a warranty is for. If you mess with to much tryin to figure it out on your own it might void your warranty. But if you would like to know what they are doing just go back and talk to the tech and most of the time they will talk with you about what and how they found it

I have to agree with btm 100% about the warranty, if I have a car or truck on warranty I don't even bother wasting my time looking to see whats wrong.

The 2007+ 4x4 module is in the left side of the radio cavity in the dash. There's nothing that is serviceable there except the complete module. If you want to reset it, that can be done by removing its fuses for a few minutes or by disconnecting the negative battery cable.

just take it to the dealership, let them deal with everything, thats what i did

Update ,brought my truck to the dealership, the mechanic says i need a new shift motor,i told him i used
my 4 wheel drive maybe twice last winter,he said thats the problem not used enough and the shift motor seizes ,he said once in a while just to flick your 4x4 switch to make the shift motor move ,he ordered a new shift motor saying that ford updated the contacts in the one he ordered, whatever that means,he also said that in the Ford Explorers if you do not use your 4 wheel drive that often you will seize up your shift motor and burn out your 4x4 module in other words if you dont use it you will lose it. |
I try and remember to put it in 4WD even in the summertime for a few miles every now and then just to activate all the 4WD systems.
|
i was talking to the Ford mechanic after he installed the new shift motor ,he showed me the old one
and said that they have problems they are not as good as the new ones with the better updated electrical contacts that he just installed ,in other words the original shift motor is crap maybe just good to make it past the warranty period, |
i use my 4x4 all the time in the winter. keeps the rear end from sliding around when driving on snowy roads.

My shift motor's really picky, sometimes it works, others it doesn't. Usually tapping it with a hammer gets it to work
