recently bought a 2002 ranger and have some window issues. obvious when I bought it that the pass. window wasn't functioning. switch on drivers side wouldn't work it. when I tore the door panel off, found that the wiring block had been disconnected from the passenger side switch. hooked it back up, switch on drivers side still wouldn't operate it , switch on passenger side would roll it down but it won't roll it up. motor seems to be strong rolling it down so i'll assume it will likely work to get it up, maybe. anybody have some suggestions or hints on what to replace. and is there a way to get my window back up should it take me a while to repair it.

Wiring block was disconnected so no one rolled down the window.......and couldn't roll it back up.


Window motors are DC motors so to turn motor one-way you give it 12v and ground, window goes down, to turn motor the other way you reverse the power, ground and 12v and window goes up.

The passenger door switch gets its 12volts directly from the Window Safety Relay(Auxiliary Relay box 1, under dash), as does the Drivers Door switch.

The Grounds for the passenger door switch come from the Drivers door switch.

The fact the motor works on passenger side(and driver side) means the 12volts is there so safety relay is working, your issue is in the ground wiring and since the drivers door switch also doesn't work for passenger window, then I would suspect the wiring.
Could be the drivers door switch though, maybe even passenger switch but drivers door control usually doesn't "use" the passenger switch as a pass thru.

Common place for wiring issue is the drivers door, where the wire passes thru from door to body, wires gets bent every time door opens and closes

Having a similar issue, I swapped driver switch with one from the junk yard and nothing happened (maybe that one was bad too). Will also check the door boot tomorrow.

 

well I tore into the doors. checked all the wiring to the fixtures. may have to do some switch replacing someday, looks like some work had been done already. drivers door rubber boot that shields the wiring running from the door thru the frame. pulled it back to check the wiring and there it was, a broken wire. spliced back together and it worked, for the time being. thanks again.

Finding broken wires is very hard.

 

fortunately this was relatively simple. the break was right in the rubber boot area, and it was a previous splice. I just hope that's all it was for the time being. again, thanks. i'll be back on if anything else crops up.
