Icon5 90' Ford Ranger Won't Start – Electrical Issue? Need Help Diagnosing

Hey everyone,
1st post here.

I’m having trouble with my 90'Ranger, and I’m hoping for some advice. Here’s the issue:
  • Initial Problem: The truck wouldn’t start one very cold morning (24°F). When I turned the key, I heard a single “clunk” but nothing else.
  • What I’ve Tried So Far:
    • I topped off the battery later that night, thinking it might be low. No change.
    • The starter relay was replaced back in October.
    • After consulting with friends and family (all mechanics), the consensus was a starter issue. So, I pulled the starter, had it rebuilt, and reinstalled it. The problem still persists.
  • Current Status: The battery is showing 12.5 volts.
At this point, I’m not sure where to go next. Could it be an issue with the wiring, ignition switch, or something else entirely? Any advice or troubleshooting tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Have someone hold the key in the start position while you whack the starter with a hammer. If that causes it to start turning the motor over then the solenoid on the side of the start is getting stuck and maybe they didn't replace it when they rebuilt your starter.

Also I'm surprised you got your starter rebuilt, that doesn't happen often these days.

In addition to volts, you can test the battery amperage under load. 12.5v might seem healthy, but if cranking amps are low, especially in cold, it's something to check. Or just try to start it on a jump on a healthy battery. Check grounds etc.

Don't put your multimeter on the battery in Amps mode or it'll melt. (Not a pro but steps above have solved a similar issue).

(Everyone wants to know where you got your starter rebuilt :) )
