9145 fog bulbs to 9005 headlight bulbs?

i was wondering if this is a bad idea, i have 9145 sylvania's in my fog lights now, but want to switch to something brighter... 9005 headlight bulbs have the same connection as well as mounting areas yet they're 65watt as opposed to the 9145's 45watt operation. is this swap a bad idea?

thanks, drew

9145 is the stock foglamp bulb...BUT....9005 fits in those holes with a weird wiggle and it'll slip right into place. 9145s are 45w i believe and 9005 are 65w i believe. LOTS of people run 9005's in their fogs...hell i did back in the day.

BUT...

IF you want something brighter...GET HID's!! They are only slightly more money than the Silverstars and far superior.

Yeah, I agree with Shane - I absolutely love my HID's.... If you don't want it to look crazy-colored just get the 4300, or 4500's.

cool, thanks guys. any good sites to find the hid's?

Here's the store i highly suggest...

http://stores.ebay.com/AUTOLUMINATE

Order the H10/9145. Yellow coloring cuts through the fog...so if you want that, go 3000k. OR...if you want halogen coloring(whitish w/ yellow hue), go with 4300/4500k.

and a link to an auction...

greatly appreciated as always shane, maybe one day i'll have half the knowledge you do about these trucks. last question... where'd you get your headache rack from?

Fx4wannabe01 01-03-2009 04:54 PM

HAHA...no problem man....no problem at all. that's what this place is for.....asking questions and getting answers. lol. i've learned alot from here and hands on experience with my truck and my buddys and fellow members trucks.

my rack is a ProTech 'cab gaurd' as they call it...i call it a headache rack. Got it through my buddy's 4wheel shop..and i picked it up straight from the manufacturer. Ran me $350ish i think? http://www.protech.net is their webaddy. check it out.

You can also take apart the housing and get rid of the metal ring inside. With it out the light gets spread out a bit wider.

just found one on protech's site. dont get pissed if you see me with one soon. lol thanks again shane.

i run 9005's. they are really bright.

but pretty soon i will be running HID's in there.

just not sure where i will mount the ballasts for the fogs yet.

I also run Sylvania Silverstar 9005's in my fogs. They are really bright and do the trick, but I find they only last 10-12 months, and when 1 burns out, the other shortly follows. The 9005's need a little manuvering to get into the housing but I find that they do not provide a real good seal. There are the common problems of the fog lights getting condensation in them and fogging up, as well as premature bulb life.

I've often thought about switching to the 9145 bulb to see if they last a little longer. When I originally switched from my stock bulbs to Silverstars (more then 4 years ago) I switched the headlight 9007's and the fogs 9005's at the same time. I've gone through many many many 9005 bulbs in the fogs, but I have the original 9007's in the headlights.

I just recently switched my 9007 headlight Silverstars for the 9007 Silverstar Ultras. We'll see if they last as long. I've kept my 9007 Silverstars as replacements in case the Ultras don't hold up.

Tys 4x4 FTW 01-05-2009 09:48 AM

i took out my HID's for a while and bought some ultras. i only had em in for a few months, while they lit up the road great, i got really bored of having boring yellow headlights again lol, so i put my HID's back in.
