92 Ranger Ignition Issue

Good Evening,

I am having issues with my ranger as earlier today my key would turn and all the power in the cab would come on. Battery was dead though so I turned the key off and waited a little for the battery to charge. After awhile I came back and tried to turn the key and nothing happened. The power in the cab didn’t come on besides the cab light when the door is opened. I checked the headlights and they even come on. So I thought it was the ignition lock cylinder and replaced it. Still the same issue is there with turning the key to on and start and not even the power in the cab coming on. I’m by far lost in this issue and would take any advice I can take to figure this issue out.

thank you,
kyle

Welcome to the forum

Battery cables need to be removed and cleaned

Check the 40 to 60amp fuses in engine fuse box

The ignition key cylinder doesn't control the power
The ignition SWITCH under the steering column does, when you turn the key it pushes and pulls a rod inside the steering column that slides ignition switch into its 4 positions

So the other thing I just noticed is that the springy was that the key had when you turn the key to start isn’t there anymore. What kind of issue would that entail?

That would be the ignition switch under the steering column

C&P link

The actuator rod that runs inside the steering column can also be damaged

Sounds like you need to test the switch - ?

Sorry this took longer then expected. But I am going to post a video of the issue I am currently having and hopefully narrow down the issue I am having.

The spring thing is probably some that you did wrong when you put it back together. It's pretty obvious the switch is not giving power.

So it would be the switch that I’d have to replace?

Sounds like it. If you’re handy with a meter you can test it.

And that’s testing that red with light blue colored wire?

well good news!!! The switch was blown apart into three separate pieces. Went to the junkyard and replaced it with a used one and back to starting and running normally like it was. Thank you to all who helped solve this mystery for me, I greatly appreciate it!!
