Need Help with '84 Ford Ranger XLT Electrical

******SOLVED THE RUDDY WIRES PROBLEM*****&&&&THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT EVERYBODY!!Hi , Changed the signal light mechanism on the column.(Large Learning Curve) Did not have the book(Have Haynes Now),Thought they made the new part without the 2 plastic modules now.Pried all switches out of old installing directly onto Terminals on New.Then re attaching ones that didn't "lock" on ,re installed covers,Started truck ...No signal lights ...and...and...Last night for the seventh time in Nine days I achieved both signal lights, and brake lights,Head lights and hi Beam, and the horn operating on the horn switch. This time the plastic modules are in place.I have not been able to find the combination of plugs connected to posts to achieve everything including the four way flashers working.Compounding the problem the last time I achieved this combo.I started the truck warmed it up moved it out on the driveway and it Died.Had a really long tough time getting it started,It has strong initial start, then immediately dies,as if switched off.Almost like it is getting absolutely no fuel. The wiring schematic in the Haynes Manuel, and another one I found online somewhere,Have wires running to a "MULTI FUNCTION SWITCH" the color codes of some of the wires match mine some are different.I haven't been able to track anything down that looks at the post clusters of the two modules upper and Lower, that designates what operation each post function is,and what Function what wire has to match it to the post it should go to.I am certain the way the wires are attached is the only way that each function is achieved that I have gotten, and just as sure that the four way flasher function not working is tied in to the vehicle not continuing to run when started.Don't Know if I have set up some sort of dead short .Think if some one could even give me a word picture of an '83 to 86 set up ie: bottom wire is:green w orange stripe/ next two above are: inside white w red hash marks ,outer Dark Blue ,then above next wire is....I have spent days getting it to this point, once again ,stubbornly saying there can only be so many combinations of where the wires can go.AT MY WITS END...

ok well turn signals and four ways work with the blinker relay, which only works the the ignition switch is in the on position. and is this a relay your talking about or what, if its a relay and you post the wiring diagram and can explain what is suppose to happen then maybe i can help you since i do know relays adn try to slow down and explain each idvidual problem one at a time, your explentaion above is a little hard to read.

Hi Jordan,I have solved the ruddy wiring issue, now I need to work out why on strong start, when I release the ignition to the run position the truck is dying,Talked to one guy about it and he says to check the screen on main fuel line to the carb, and the fuel pumping same time with the starter switch just kicked on .(Replaced the fuel pump Last summer a year ago in August.

hmm, well a quick sheck would be the solenoid if you didn't check that already, but this is wierd. now by screen does he mean fuel filter or what, hmm, i don't know too much about carb engines, but i'll ask a guy who will def know and knows way more about carb engines than me, but i mean you have to have gas pumping when you crank the engine or it wont have anything to burn.

Hi Jordan,By screen,he was explaining that on the steel fuel line from the fuel tanks that goes into the carb there is often a double nut,&you need to use two wrenches to back that apart without both nuts turning,& often they have a screen, similar to one you can get for (or sometimes comes in ) a garden hose,Round circle cone of fine, fine mesh, along the same lines as a sieve/sifter for flour/baking/straining.In any event,my fuel feeding system, doesn't have it set up that way,or the screen. It is a single7/16ths nut to back out,and it was set up with, rubber fuel line from the end of the steel fuel line into an in- lineFuel filter to rubber hose to the connector/nut piece that threads into the carb housing. So after checking for fuel at that point, put the end into a small dish, turned on the ignition for a start, and had about 1/8th of a cup of fuel in the dish, then I disconnected the in-line filter at both ends, quickly draining the fuel in it out into a mason jar. Then lightly blew Back thru it and tapped the in flow end on a white plastic lid,to see if any crud came out..Put it back in ,Tried the ignition a few times,Tried pouring the clear gas directly into the carb, tried the ignition couple more times ,wiggled the ignition baby black wire a little, thought,"OH I DID TRY UNCOUPLING THIS NARROW GREY PLASTIC BOX BELOW THE IGNITION SWITCH<COUPLA DAYS AGO THINKING IT MIGHT HAVE AN IN_LINE FUSE INSIDE...OPEN IT UP AGAIN,TAKE ANOTHER LOOK< MAYBE ITS NOT BACK TOGETHER TIGHT ENOUGH....OPENED IT AGAIN<SNAPPED IT BACK TOGETHER .Tried the ignition switch again...and VOLLAH!!! It's running and warming up.Took the truck out of the garage, drove it to the end of the driveway, shut it off,Had to start it a few times, ran for a bit died and a huge gunshot backfire noise as it died,Thought holy o cow didn't like that one.Let it sit a bit started it again, seemed to be running okay, backed it down the driveway closer to the garage.shut her down ,thought, get another in line filter, change it and try it tomorrow when it's light out and see how it goes then.Checked and topped up the fluids.Went out an picked up another Filter.OH GEEZ I AM LONG WINDED AREN"T I.Almost think I have been conversation starved.HA..HA..

yeah seems like its conning together, but did you check the distributer, its possible that the didstributer is faulty and that could be causeing the problem, and if it road a little rough then maybe he timing could be off, and thats easy to check, just get a timing light, and there shlould be timing marks on one of the pulls, i belive the crank shaft pully, i'd mark it with chalk to see it and the owners manual should tell you what degree it should line up with on the timing idex, and you hook the timing light up to your battery and put the clamp around the number 1 wire and when the light flashes ( kinda like a strob light) you should see the marking, if you don't then the timing is off and you losten the bolt at the base of the distributer and adjust it as so until the mark on the pully allines with the timing index, bad timing could cause your truck to back fire and if you didn't check that yet its possible that could be the isse or a major part of the issue

Hi again Jordan, Gettin closer, Spent today till 10 pm at er again.Changed the in line fuel filter,Then fought air locks tryin to start it ,Then ran across a cracked fuel hose just before the fuel pump.(So it was sucking air,Changed that, found a 20 amp fuse blown, stole one from the cigarette lighter, filled it in with a 15. Picked up 20 n 25 's when I picked up the hose, threw a new air filter in for good measure.Crawled under the truck and tightened up the upper bolt on the starter motor again, after dark tookt the dash off again and changed the bulb for the left turn signal(STILL not lighting up) knocked the wiper Lever and it went wonky on /off /on /off even when I moved the lever to the off position ,then it quit and wouldn't go at all.(RADIO stopped working too.Would not start again ,pushed the truck back around the house(Farther this time) then NOSE first into the garage.Put more light on it that way.Took a break to eatabout 7:30 pm then went back at it.I went and bought another 84Ranger yesterday 'n had it towed here....I HAVE SPARE PARTS. Stole the wiper mechanism off the column on that one and changed it.Still no wipers, radio and no start. Put the charger on it again.Checked the celnoid 2 times, once with the probe light, and next time I tried welding two screw drivers across it.There is juice there.Checked fuse connectors and fuses a couple times.Looked over the wires n grounds under the hood, found one ugly bad green one,Bare wires joining into stuff, and into a sheathed clip together male /female joiner(UGLY INSIDE THERE TOO) bare old frayed wire coming out the other end, tested all along that one with the probe light and it's a live power one.runs to a little box on the front of a laying down can shape across the engine alongside/in front of the carb says Something like time test/tach test? on it and the center plug on the distributor cap runs over to the front of it and plugs in .So I wiggle pushed it, and went to the dist.Cap and wiggle pushed on all of them too.'n the one plug lead behind where the in line fuel filter joins into the hose that feeds the carb. felt like it seated a bit.So I may have loosened /bumped it when I was working that hose and clamp on there.Anyways, Next I try the radio /wipers/and starting it IT ALL STARTS, so I shut it off and started it about 5 times.Never once put my foot on the gas pedal .Started like a dream.I had set up the charger again ready to plug on and in for the night.so I thought yeah hook it up.walk away from it,and see what it does in the morning. Thanks for listening to all the prattle .Belinda

hey any time, i don't mind listening, haha, yeah sound like you need a couple rolls of electical tape for all those bare wires, and its always stupid things like a loose connection that keep things from working, with the turn signals and wipers try testing the who circuit fallowing the lead wire to the sitch to the blinker relay to the lights, check for bad grounds, but it seems like you might have a bad collum swith, try replacing the switch thing with the wipers and turn sinals on it, does the high beams ang high beam flash work? and that green wire i should be your left turn sigal, and i belive yellow is for the right.

yeah i hope it was warmer were you were, i was also workign on my truck last night replacing spark plugs, and spark plug wires, it was like 25 degrees, and it took 2 and a half hours due to the fact that a twin plugged inline four's drivers side spark plus are pain in the ***, need over a foot of extntion for the back two and a universal joint for the first one, and then the boots that have never been removed before took an and a half to get all them off reaching behind the alternator and under and behind the power steering reservoir, biggest pain in the *** ever so about two hours on the drivers side and a half hour on the passenger side.

Hi again,Not warm here the high is around 6 degrees celsius ,thats about 40-44 and low is about 2 degrees now, about 36 F so it is warmer than where you are,& close to the ocean , so high humidity,so it feels colder,They refer to here as being in the banana belt,it's basically rainforest on the coast here, almost always raining in the fall winter spring.& what they do get for snow here is more often slush, wet snow, sometimes deep, there is freezing and ice too,it's on and off, between rain.I find it colder here than up in the south central interior where I grew up and there was real snow, the dry stuff.& maybe I am just getting wimpier with age.Took the charger off the truck at 8 am.started it up and drove 9 km.about 4 1/2 miles, shut it off loaded up 5 1/2 Banana Boxes of tile ,started and drove back.Everything seems to work ,so I will put the steering column cover back on ,'n get some chores on other stuff done.Still have to change that ugly green wire and connector.I have picked up new spark plug wires awhile back, haven't changed them yet, puttin it off.Sounds like yours were nasty.Belinda

Hi Jordan , Yes the truck seems to be running well now,the 302 sounds so good.Had the battery tested and the alternator as well and have good voltage on them.Picked up another length of fuel hose yesterday, need to change the longer one between the steel one outa the tanks and the next steel piece before the pump,Just played hookie today, looked after some other stuff. The in line filter is draining back, so i have an air weep somewhere back behind it. After I change the longer one,I will do the fight the airlock thing, and need to change one baddest wire and the connections someone put it into.So I am back to work in the house tonite.See if I can get to the line tomorrow. well there you go and now if somthing else goes wrong you can should be able to really narrow it down, and look at it this way this problem really gave you a chance to get to know all the ins and outs of your truck.

Hi there again Jordan,Well changed the other fuel line today, and the positive cable on the battery replaced.Next time I went to the auto parts store,I crawled under the truck to take measurements of the mufflers,They both went this morning,They had one ,ordered the other one & some pipe.It will be here in the morning,I will go down pick it up and go from there.I left the store& I guess the fuel line change was still working its way out .Started the truck,it made a lil fart noise n died, started it a 2nd time and there was a gunshot backfire, smoke coming out of the hood, popped the hood ,n it was coming out of the breather.Had to let it sit for awhile ,then it started fine.Nothin like attention gettin behaviour.

Just standard stock ones, can't afford to go fancy right now,Need to pretty the lil beast up 1st as well. Not sure what the emission standards stats are,in the big cities like Vancouver they have air care testing places that the vehicles have to go thru and pass .Once a year I think,They are trying to move most of the older vehicles along,The province of Alberta next door to B.C. did a big incentive buy out on older vehicles a few years ago.

Just a trace of rain today, spent the day on cleanup /yard work .Put the side rails on and loaded her above the cab roof with grunge yard weeds, blackberry and rose prunings, and then a neighbors yard weed scrap and a demolished overgrown butterfly bush. This stuffs been sittin around (in the RAIN) so long, drippy smelly.I shuda taken a pic of the poor truck, & her & I.Probably looked like the honey wagon exploded.I took a pitchfork to load and unload with.Overhead, some too.Took out the knee on my jeans ,snagged on the yard,I kept hoppin forward, made it worse.dumped that fork on the truck, looked at the 3 way tear, just went in the house & grabbed 3 safety pins to snag the knee together. They must have felt sorry for us only cost 2/3 what I expected to dump it off.(YAYYY!!!)Then I came back home & kept at it outside til 5:30. Wet n Cold.Changed into dry clothes grabbed a bite to eat, 7:30 I was toast.Just woke up.
