Hello I have a 1998 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0 automatic and I only have reverse and second gears any ideas what could be the problem I was told it might be a shift solenoid.

It's also possible that it's a flaw with the valve body. They're prone to failure in a 3.0 auto.

On another note, the autotragic transmissions used behind the 3.0 were beyond garbage. Now sounds like a great time for you to do a 5 speed swap, if you're interested in a longer lasting transmission and a much better drive experience.
