99 Ranger 3.0 no start problem
99 Ranger 3.0 no start problem
Hello all,
I believe it started with the anti theft and not reading the key. It did this one other time, but then it read the key and all the dash lights and buzzer came on.
I stopped at the store for 5 minutes. No lights or buzzer and no start. Battery tested good and shows 12.5. The main fuse next to power distribution box only shows 4 volts. Somewhere I am holding back power. I tried to reset anti theft a lot. No luck. I have disconnected the battery a few times. No luck. I am going to unplug battery for a the day and see what can reset.
all the fuses look good but I’m worried about relays. PCM relay or something else?
thanks for any help!

Welcome to the forum
Reads like your engine fuse box has some corrosion on its main connection to battery
Primary fuses(30-60amps) in engine fuse box should read same volts as battery, 12.5v in this case
There is no "cutoff" for those fuses they have a direct connection to battery positive, so a 4volt reading means corroded wires
There should be 2 battery positive cables, larger one goes to starter motor, smaller one goes to engine fuse box, and that connection or wire is the problem
PATS is certainly effected by low voltage but PATS just has 1 light on the dash, it has no connection to any other lights on the dash
With key on there is a Bulb Test, all lights on the dash should come on and then some will go off
No lights coming on means 12volt power issue, nothing to do with PATS

Yes. That is what I was thinking. Along with a relay or two. I cleaned the terminals and the fuse (link). No change. I need to check the power to alternator and starter to see if they are getting 12v. The truck is stranded. Might try jumping power to link to check dash power.... get it started and get it home.
I still have ideas that the key is somehow related...
thanks for the reply!!!

All good now.
so I did it again and completely overthought this deal. It was simply a corroded battery cable at the terminal. I jump the battery to the power link and it cranked just fine. I disassembled the terminal cut away some of the corroded cable and cleaned everything. All good for now. So glad the key was not the problem!!!!
