Ranger 2010+ : anyone changed alternator for a bigger one?
Hi,
I can't find any bigger alternator than the stock one for a 2010 4.0L SOHC. Something must have changed in the engine configuration. Many website don't list the 2010-2011 rangers as possible upgrades.
thank you!

Well turns out if you have a Ford Ranger 2010-2011 you are **** out of luck.
No upgrades for you!!
2010+ have a Mitsubishi alternator instead of a Ford 3G series alternator.
This alternator is PCM/ECU controlled. No shop in the world want to touch that!!
Just finished contacting almost 12 alternators companies.

Can somebody take a real picture of a 99-2000-2001-2002-2003-2004-2005 SOHC?
I Would like to see the difference from mine.
See if i have enough space to put a different version so i could buy and take the risk to share here
Your help is appreciated :-)
Thanks for the inquiry but at this time we do not have a high amperage version for your vehicle. The Mitsubishi alternator that is on your truck does not upgrade well and there is no other manufacturer that makes the same mounting configuration for it.

Greetings,
Thank you for your inquiry.
You don't have much space behind the alternator now, our 2006 F-250 would work mounting wise but the only issue is the rear end of the case not clearing. Another issue is the regulator, since it's a Mitsubishi you could potentially see a charge light due to the configuration in the truck.
Those are the issues I foresee with this unit.

From Mechman:
Your vehicle uses a Mitsubishi alternator. It has a specific voltage
regulator in it that we cannot duplicate in a G series alternator. There is
a chance that the earlier model T mount alternator would bolt in and work,
but I cannot guarantee that. You also might get a "check battery" light
coming on in the dash if the voltage regulator is not compatible.

Bump.
Anyone have any updates?
It's not that i don't believe this is true, but there are a couple rumors about 2010's out there like 15's won't fit, when in fact there are dozens of members running them and some ranger were equipped with them stock, or that superlifts and BL's won't work because of TC when a lot of people have lifted 10+ with no problems. So I'm cautiously optimistic.

Hmm, alright my bad. I should have specified 15 inch wheels when I said "15's" and pluralized Ranger in "some rangers* were equipped" but otherwise for the most part my grammar was relatively sound. The intent of my inquiry was to determine if anyone had any more information regarding aftermarket heavy duty alternators that would work with a 2010.
Then I went on a not entirely related tirade about a lot of the misconceptions 2010+ owners deal with. I brought up wheels and Traction Control because there are a lot of false rumors/threads that say 15's won't fit 2010's or that TC makes it impossible to lift a 2010, and that's just not true. In fact even the superlift website says TC will interfere with their lift, but it doesn't... So in post #5 when the OP quoted some conversations he had with alt companies saying that it is impossible to replace a 2010+ alt with an aftermarket model, I'm tentatively skeptical as to if that is true. Maybe those specific companies don't have a compatible model, but I'm not ready to close the book on the subject.
Hope that makes a little more sense...

I figured that's where you were going. I also have common sense. I'm thinking of the people who read that and think "there's a 15" alt and I need a BL to run it?"
I've never heard of the TC messing up with a BL and didn't even know about this alt problem until I read this thread. I did know about the 15" rims but that was due to the larger brake rotors used. However I've heard they still can fit.

Who changed the subject and why ?
R we in a new thread ?
I knew the high output alternators were larger but 15”, wow, that’s too big to fit under the hood.
GrizzyDo, maybe start another thread on your subject, why confuse this one or maybe you just like to.
There are a lot of companies that stop stating the use of their products in Ranger around the 08-09 on because of the Out of Production threats from Ford, maybe the same engine in an earlier truck will have the answer. Find the last year the alternator is stated to fit, check it out for similarity to yours.
Then check the OEM fitment guide, if OEM fits through your year truck then the Aftermarket unit should.
