speedo problem
i have a 02 ranger with the 3.0, 5spd manual, and 2 wheel drive. i recently purchased the truck and the speedo isn't working. the man i bought it from said he recently had the trans replaced. i'm just wondering where is the speed sensor located on this truck. i see a sensor that has what appears to be an opening for a cable on the trans but the instrument cluster does not have an opening for one. could this "new" trans be from something else or an older ranger? any suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated.

I think you may be right that the transmission is from an earlier Ranger.
The OSS sensor should be in the driver side of the tailshaft housing of the 2001+ manual transmission. To help you ID the sensor connector, the 2002 wire color codes are dark blue/yellow and gray/red.
95~97 Rangers used a signal generator that plugged into a hole in the transmission like a conventional speedo cable but there was no cable. The SG's output pulse was used directly by the electric speedometer, the speed control and the PCM.
94 and a few years earlier used a conventional cable driven speedometer and also had a VSS sensor at the the trans to keep the PCM informed about vehicle speed.
