adding lights
 

i'm just curious i would like to add some extra lights onto my back rack and i'm wondering about the wiring seeing how i have yet to find a method to runa switch into the cabin so i'm wondering all the lights are 100 watt, so is it possible to just splice 2 100 watt's into the reverse lights directly or not and would it be possible to splice 2 100 watt's into the high beams.

I posted a thread showing my lights... Check it out and if you're interested I can tell you how it's wired... But don't splice 100w more into your existing high beam circuit. The wires weren't meant to handle it. If you do, relay it.

my problem with adding lights was that i couldn't find a way to run a switch into the cab i couldn't find any hole through the firewall so i then decided i wanted to splice my bigger lights into the reverse light line and the new front lamps into the high beams could you recommend another method and i'm extremely dumb when it comes to electrical so i have no idea how or were to put a relay.

I'm sure Jp7 or the other electrical guru's will chime in shortly, but like was mentioned do not put 100watt lights on the factory harness, It will burn the insulation and cause all kinds of fun stuff to fry. Relay's are great. https://www.ranger-forums.com/forum2...=wiring+relays

Follow that guide. Relay's are sure proof. Just please don't wire up the lights directly into the factory wiring. The wiring was never meant to handle extra current draw. Relays will save you time, and your truck (from catching fire).

The cleanest way to run the power/ground to these lights is under the truck to the engine bay.
Use a relay close to the battery and a fused line from the battery to the relay.
Run a ground wire too, the same gauge wire as the power, twist the red and blk together.
You are talking 16 amps so 14-ga wire will work but use a good quality 12-ga, just do not use house-hold type wire, it has to be stranded and if possible fine strands.
After the relay and light wiring are installed all that is left is one small gauge wire (18 or 20 ga) to be run in the cab to a switch and on to a circuit in the Circuit Panel, use a small amperage fuse in this line too.

Not directly but if you run the power and ground wires as above you can run the relay switch wire to the Reverse Light switch if you wanted to instead of the dash switch OR there is a way to have auto and manual light operation but it would take more wiring.

Same as above but run the relay switch wire to the high beam wire instead of the Reverse Lights.


In the long run there is only one small gauge wire needed to be run in the cab from pin 86 on the Relay.
The main power would never enter the cab.
The only area of concern on the main wires from the battery/relay to the lights would be keeping the wire out of harms-way and running the wire between the Cab and Bed, it would need a little protection from chaffing.

Of course if you are none with this project then all of my writing is for not.
