aftermarket fog light wiring issue

i hooked up a set of aftermarket foglights into the low beam wires and after about 1/2 hour of use they started flickering the foglights and headlights idk if its a bad ground or too much draw...if i turn the lights on after they have been off awhile they work good until they get warm...btw its a 93 ranger without factory foglights

Check the ground. Where did you put them?

i mounted the lights on my bumper and wired hot side of light to low beam wire on headlight harness and wired ground side of fog light to ground side of headlight harness so the fog lights would go out with the high beams so my truck will pass state inspection

The headlights in 93 used self-resetting circuit breakers instead of fuses. My guess is that adding the foglamp load to the low beam circuit puts the amp draw right at the edge of the CB's rating. The better way to do this would be to use the low beam wire to trigger a relay for the fogs instead of powering them directly from the low beam circuit. That's how the factory did it.

silly question: you didn't just run a wire from your fog lights to the low beam wire, did you? I hope you also have in line fuse, relay and a switch for your fog lights.

Its not a silly question to be honest no i didnt i had my buddy install em and he went to school for this kinda stuff and every other install he has done has never done this or anything wrong before it has him just as stumped as me....given the issues we are having now we are jus gona wire it up to a switch unless anybody has any other ideas...i like the idea about wiring it up like factory but i wanna make sure i didnt fry anything first but i have no idea on how to tell if i have and its gona be a few days before my buddy can look at it...im scared i fried the wiring harness or something

Sounds like the Circuit Breaker may be toast…
Might be grounds and ground are the most common problems in a vehicles electrical system.
Try running the grounds back to the battery or a common point like a terminal strip or stud and then to the battery; this method helps to reduce if not eliminate grounding issues.

If you use this schematic ( https://www.ranger-forums.com/f59/au...-light-105901/ ) and replace the switch/Indicator with the Low Bean headlight wire to pin 85 on the relay, then you should get good steady light from the Fogs when the low beams are selected

But the Headlights will to be addressed separately’ Headlights can have bad grounds too, make sure to check both headlights grounds.
the headlight grounds can be run back to the battery also and for more and better light from the headlights you can use the schematic and rewire the headlights the same way.

Luck,

First, check the grounds for the headlights.
Next, IMHO, use a new circuit for the headlights but if you want to keep what you have find the CB and replace it.
If you want a new circuit the schematic in the other post will work, replace the Fog/Drive Lights with head lights.

I don't have a 93 Ranger to look at, just a book. It seems to be showing the headlight circuit breaker as part of the headlight switch. There is nothing that says whether that CB is replaceable separately. I would guess that it is not.

Some things to think about:

The right and left headlamps have separate ground points so it seems unlikely that both would fail simultaneously. Possible but unlikely.

In 93, the high and low beams on each side use the same ground point and all use the same circuit breaker. If, as I understand it, the flickering only occurs with low beams, it does not seem that it could be caused by either the grounds or the circuit breaker. Have you actually tried it with the highs on for an extended period of time?

The Multifunction Switch (left stalk) selects high or low beams. There is at least the possibility that the low beam contacts in the MS did not like the additional current of the added foglamps when they were connected. I would try turning on the low beams and do a wiggle test on the column harness and the hi/lo lever, looking for a change in the flickering.

Ok as a basic synopsis....i hooked up the fog lights as described above nxt day omw to work i turned on headlights aftr about half hour of use they started to flicker turned high beams on and continued to work with no issues when got to work turned low beams back on and they were flickering again so i diconected the ground to the fog lights and the low beams quit flickering after leaving work and driving about 45 min the low beams completly quit tried switching to high beams and those were out too they came back on after a few seconds both low and high it did that a few times n then stayed on till i got home bout a 20 min addtional ride llet the truck sit for about 30 min n tried turning lights on and no headlights again but everything else turned on it took 3 times of pulling the switch in/out for the lights to come on and lo/hi was wrking again...im thinking i mite have shorted out the headlight switch or maybe a sticky relay?

O and i played around with the multifunction switch during flickering and no change in it however when the lights complelty went i kept switchn lo to hi until the lights came on however idk if it was me messing with the switch that made em come back on or the lights jus had a mind of its own and decided to turn back on

Glad they were installed corectly. I knew a guy who installed them just by running a wire to the headlights. wires started smoking and then shorted out, then nearly caught fire

after doing some more research the 2 most likely canidates for the issue is the headlight switch and/or multifnctn switch does this sound right?....also after thinking very hard and long i remember having a similar problem with a 98 ranger that i hooked up 2 mini foglamps to the left low beam light and it did something similiar to this but evrytime i messed with grounds it would work again and after about a week or so it finally quit for good and turned out it had melted my plug on the M.S. so once i replaced that and did away with the foglights completely my problem never came back do yall think it could be something as simple as that again....jus simply drawing 2 much power and melting a plug harness that i cant see without ripping some plastic pieces off?
