convert projectors to HID?

I just recently got some new headlights for my 2000 ranger which feature projectors on them besides the main beams. Anyways after getting them hook up I'm disappointed in the light output as they only use 35watt halogens in the projectors...Not sure what type of bulb. I'm wondering if it would be relatively easy to convert them over to an HID kit.

Besides not knowing the bulb type there's just a few other issues to be resolved before i can get a kit. First would be how could i hook it up to the lights as they are enclosed and have their own wire leads coming out of the fixture. Secondly I'm already using the wire harness relay that came with the new headlamps which also goes to a switch in the cab while using the relay part too hook directly to the battery.

Anyone with similar headlights got any ideas or have figured out how do the conversion already? Thanks :)

Next mod after might be my main 9007 lamps but that's easy lol.

is it an h3 bulb? if so you can get a 55W or a 100W h3 from autozone.. take that cover off the bulb and see what it is. im betting either an H3 or an H1.. if its either of thoughs they make HID kits for them.. but im betting a 55W or a 100W will be the cheapest and most affective route.

when i did mine, i had to cut open the back of the projector housing to run the wires out the back and fit the bulb. then siliconed it up to keep from leaking.

Unfortunately I'm not sure what sort of bulb it is in there. Would have to remove the headlamp again to figure it out and just after i got the pins back on too(major pita btw). all I know is the bulb that's in there is currently a 35w halogen. My biggest concern with any type of upgrade is heat output as I'd like to keep it down near what the current bulb produces rather it be HID or a replacement higher wattage halogen. I don't want my headlamp melting

If you convert to even a 55watt HID I doubt it would be high enough heat to do anything to the "melting" degree on there.. I woudl be more afraid of dropping one of those 100 watt bulbs in though lol

i dont think you can get an HID higher than 35w in an H3 or H1.. 35w regardless is not enough for a headlight, you need 55w or higher i bet you cant see ****, especialy with a projector..

You will probably be better off with a regular halogen. Just because they are projectors doesn't mean they are made to work with HID's correctly. For example some cars come with projectors but HID's are optional, when you get the optional HID's the projector comes with a spacer in it so that the HID bulb isn't as far forward and throws a better pattern. When you get it without the HID's the spacer isn't there and it keeps the filament in the right place.

well I caved to the pressure of putting in 55watt silverstars. In fact I got them free off a friend who was going to use them in a truck of his right before it got wrecked so he had no use for them. So far they seem brighter. I just hope they don't get to hot and melt the projector housings.

Make sure converting to HID's is an acceptable modification in your Home State before doing this.
Her's wasn't the Rare HID test mule?
