Swap on an Explorer axle with disc brakes. Would definately be cheaper.

The Explorer axle should be cheaper but it's a lot more work, requiring relocation of the spring perches and shock mounts. The axle is wider which pushes the rear wheels out about 1.5". So, if you have tight clearance on your rear tires, it's going to get much tighter. I think it's a good conversion but it's not a bolt-on by any means.

I was thinking strictly cost. I'm going to TRY to find an FX4 level II 8.8 with 4.10's for my truck...eventually..

drums or disc isn't a huge deal to me. I used to want disc but I know I'd want them to match the front and I am not spending that much on 2 more so drums would actually be better for me. Thanx for the tip tho

I want discs because I don't want to have to replace my front rotors once a year from dealing with the rotational mass of my 17" wheels and 32" tires all by themselves.

With swapping to disc is the rear would you run into problems with brake line pressure. Because drums don't require near the pressure as dics do.

the kit should come with upgraded lines....even if it doesn't, still shouldn't matter...your stock lines should be good from 1800 to 3000 psi...

There are two ways to deal with the rear brake pressure, one is to adjust the proportioning valve, and the other is to replace the valve with either an aftermarket or one from an Explorer that has rear discs.

Regarding the rear brake conversion, you can get brackets from ebay for much less than $800 however you need to find rotors and calipers. The rotors are from a lincoln and the calipers are from a cadillac. Both are from the 80s I believe. I found that the Thunderbird T/C had rear discs and the calipers are the same as the FWD lincoln towncar with rear discs. What I'm working on is fabricating a bracket that will allow you to use Ranger front rotors with the Lincoln calipers. This will give you 10" rear rotors, the parking brake, and all Ford parts. I've got everything I need except the brackets and I'm hoping to get to work on that soon.

Entirely INCORRECT. Braking distance is a function of weight, weight distribution, braking efficiency and tire friction. It's only ONE factor that affects braking distance.

Sorry to call your bluff on this but it's been done and you DO NOT need to change your pressure, it works jsut fine... ask John Moorehead and about 12 others over on RPS if you don't beleive me.

Drums are nasty looking too. NOW... lets say I know this guy with a 2k1 Ranger Edge 4x4 with a 4.0L and likes to do burnouts, would it be harder on rear disc, or would it destory the discs?
