replacing worn-out alternator on my 84 ranger — purchased a compatible rebuilt rear-mount model online that almost exactly matches what i’m replacing, so no issues there. while installing, though, i noticed im missing a wire in my existing wiring harness? (very new to car repair and learning as i go, so apologies for any dumb questions etc). i have the stator and field connectors, which connect properly to the new alternator at the correct terminals (see below)
but there’s no wire to connect to the large red terminal — didn’t take one off when removing the old one, it’s just not there. based on the diagrams in my hayes manual, that’s the battery wire?
so i poked around trying to trace the circuit (this car is rife with wiring repairs and failures, so not a super easy task lol) and found that in addition to the big red battery wire, there’s a second smaller orange wire connected to the starter solenoid (see below)
i haven’t seen that wire as part of any diagram for the solenoid, nor in any pics i found online — i was wondering if maybe that’s the alternator battery wire, and it’s been mis-connected by the previous owner? but i’m very much not sure, and i’ve heard that wiring your alternator wrong can cause big problems, so i wanted to ask before i tested it.
additionally, it’s also possible there’s a wire missing from the voltage regulator? i know that runs to the alternator via, according to my manual, a black/orange wire. off of the regulator, i see this:
there is a large black/orange wire coming from a mess of wires here:
but i’m having a hell of a time following it because someone covered all the wires in electrical tape where they run along the front of the truck. it does go all the way to the left side where the starter solenoid is, and from one branch of the wires emerges that orange cable which does appear to be the same thickness as the black/orange cable
is that orange cable the alternator battery cable? am
i actively missing a wire somewhere? advice/thoughts? anything at all is much appreciated!
In 1984, well pre-1990, Ford used a lot of Fusible Links instead of Fuses
A fusible link is a 5" to 8" long wire that can "burn out"/blow without causing a fire, and its a "slow blow" so won't blow on short/small voltage spikes, so popular to use on charging systems, in ANY YEAR vehicle
That Orange wire on starter relay(solenoid) is a Fusible link, most have that rubber block to ID it as a fusible link
The other picture looks to have 2 more fusible links in the harness
The ignition switch will have a fusible link, most electrical systems without a dedicated fuse in the fuse box get 12v from a fusible link
There can be several Orange fusible links, as you can see on the diagram, A, B, D, and E, Orange in 1984 just means its a 16gauge wire size fusible link
Ford used black tape on harness's back in 1984
Unlikely a wire broke inside the harness
Best bet would be to disconnect the orange fusible link from starter relay and test continuity to Black/Orange wire to see if thats the correct fusible link
thank you for the info and the diagram! I'll test the wire continuity and see if that's the one. having a bunch of issues with the charging system on this thing -- there's a battery drain somewhere I'm still trying to find, and I can't get ANYTHING on the instrument panel to read -- but I'm hoping a correct alternator installation will help. I'll check the wire continuity and see if that's the one
EVTM = electrical and vacuum troubleshooting manual
Ford sends these out EVERY YEAR for EVERY MODEL they make, its part of the Shop Manual set that year, but often sold separately
And when you are done with it, you can usually sell it for at least what you paid for it, so free to use
Must be for your year and model, close doesn't count for wiring, lol
