Reverse lights only work between Park and Reverse

So upon troubleshooting I found my reverse lights on my '96 with a 3.0 automatic work only in a "sweet spot" between park and reverse. Once the shifter is moved into true reverse the lights go out. I'm assuming the selector for the tranny is out of adjustment. Is there a way to re-adjust it? Or is there something else that may be the cause of this? Sorry to make a new thread, I just wanted the title to have the proper description so maybe it might catch someone's eye that may shine some light on my situation.
