(I'm still new here....asked this question before but probably posted incorrectly)

Vehicle:
95 2WD, 4 cyl, std trans, 190k miles

ABS light stays on

What I've done so far:

Replace rear sensor
Replace control box behind radio with a "working" used unit
Replaced the control valve under driver side on frame with a rebuilt one from Rock Auto
Bled brakes sequentially
Positive and negative battery terminals disconnected when i was working on the system..

I may have not disconnected the battery the first time I worked on the rear sensor....can't remember.

ABS light still comes on after a few seconds and stays on steady

I've read that ABS codes can only be read by disconnecting a specific wire and grounding it, then watch the number of flashes of the ABS light. Where the heck is that plug/wire? I've no idea.

Any suggestions what to do?

I have never heard that can be done on this gen. Only scanner I know of is typically at the dealer, for them to even look at it is 100 bucks.

Maybe if you call around to bigger repair shops you can find one that can read ford abs codes.

 

In my web search I found this link that discusses an ABS diagnostic connector for a '94 Ranger with RABS:

I've run into this several places. In part the link says the following:

"Next, locate the black Rear Anti-lock Brake System II (RABS II) diagnostic connector. The diagnostic connector has two mating halves, one of which has a black/orange wire connected to it. Disconnect the two halves.
Attach one end of a jumper wire to the black with orange stripe wire side of the diagnostic connector. CAUTION: Care must be taken to connect only the black/orange stripe wire to ground. Connecting the mating connector wire to ground will result in a blown fuse.
Momentarily ground the opposite end of the jumper wire by connecting it to a good chassis ground for one to two seconds.
Grounding this wire should start the RABS lamp flashing.
The code consists of a number of short flashes and ends with a long flash"

Since I've replaced each of the functional components in the system and still have an ABS light, I'd really like to see if there "is" a way to read diagnostic codes to guide what I do next. Income problems being what they are these days I don't have the $ to pay someone to fix this. Any guidance appreciated.

well if the abs light stays on steady, then the truck senses a problem with the brake system

 

or apperently the fuse for the turn signals goes out the abs light stays on to, i don't know why but someone else on here had that happen

 

94 Rabs is one generation behind the 95 abs. Totally different truck and electronics.

The 95 has a obd I ecm but has 96+ obd II electronics, a funky year to have.

 

Update from the original Poster. I finally took the truck with the ABS light on...to a repair garage. There were no faults showing by grounding the ABS wire. The shop finally figured out the the brake fluid reservoir float level switch was bad. Replacing that cleared the ABS light! It's still not clear to me why the fluid level gave an ABS light rather than a BRAKE light, but it did.

Passing along FYI for the next guy who has an ABS fault that's hard to diagnose.
