Correction - water/oil in spark plug wells,Water in cylinder 1, oil in cylinder 2 & 3
CORRECTION - Water and Oil were discovered upon removing the spark plugs, so I misstated the location. Water and oil were in the spark plug wells.

Husband has 2007 ford ranger, 4 cylinder with just over 100K miles. It has been idling rough, so he decided to change the spark plugs. Upon removing the spark plugs, he discovered water in cylinder 1, and oil in cylinders 2 & 3. At that point we have stopped all work and are researching possible causes. There was no check engine light, and no misfiring; just a hard time starting and some rough idling. Can anyone offer suggestions on what we should do from here? Thanks.

Compression test would be the next step, but............
Water/coolant or oil on a spark plug could come from removing it, that fluid could have collected in the hole and coated spark plug as it was removed.
If there is ANY water or oil on the threads then it didn't come from inside the cylinder, only the tip of the spark plug is in the cylinder
Is engine loosing oil or coolant?
Water/coolant in cylinder will cause white exhaust smoke and it will have a sweet smell.
Engine will also overheat since cylinder will force "air" into cooling system.
This air increases pressure in cooling system which will cause overflow tank to........well overflow and bubble.
