Best way to change fuel filler neck

Whats the best way. Take off the bed or lower tank?

pwrranger88 08-08-2009 08:50 AM

imo take off the bed

Take off the bed, its only 6 bolts for the bed and then 3 for the filler neck. Don't forgot to undo the wiring harness in the back of the bed.

thanks guys

me too, take off the bed.

Any interesting reason you need to replace it?

just leaking gas all over when you fill it up....so rather than throw money on the ground I found one for 20 bucks and just gonna throw it in tomorrow...there is no room up in there even dropping the tank looks like a total pain

I have the same problem on my '99. Let us know how you made out.

I assume you found the filler neck at a junk yard...I am still looking for one for a flairside.

Mine should be here next week and then I will be attempting as well.

well it dont look to hard....a t-55 star bit 4 bucks....filler neck off craigslist...10 bucks....I would almost find a used one and cut the top side to fit the flairside...

racemx904 08-14-2009 08:27 PM

well wasnt too bad...i even had to do it solo....just blovked each side up on frame rails and took me about 1-1/2 hrs....most of that was the bed bolts were corroded bad and took about 45 minutes to get out....would have been easier with two people but you have to work with what you have...

i dont mean to thread jack or anything but my 96' ranger is leaking gas but only while im filling up the tank so does that only mean i need to replace the filler neck or is there anything else i should be looking for? thanks in advance

Well my Toyota P/U did just that. There was a small hole in the filler tube. I screwed in a 1/2" #6 pan head SS screw. That stopped the leak and it holds the tank pressure.

remove the driveshaft

then you have easier access to the filler tube
