would like Cruise Control

My 08 Ranger didn't come with Cruise Control. I would like to add it.

From what I can tell, there are 2 options.

1) An aftermarket one-size-fits-all thing from I think Hofstra or something. I don't really want that if I can help it.

2) Ford used to make a cruise control kit, but it is long discontinued. I figure if I can get a hold of one of these kits, it is what I need and want. Anyone know where I can get one of these kits?

Is this the best option? Have I thought of everything?

I don't know much about trucks, and I'm not the mechanical type.

thanks

Welcome to the forum

Since you are not a "mechanical type" then 3rd party will be what you want.

Factory requires changing steering wheel, clock spring and steering column wiring.
And thats the only real difference, Cruise buttons on steering wheel vs on separate control.

Cruise control has 3 main parts
1. "Brains", called cruise amplifier or control, this gets the pulse from a speed sensor(1995 and up), and it then opens a vacuum solenoid in the actuator/modulator.
Brain is also connected to brake light switch and clutch or neutral switch, these disengage cruise automaticly

2. Actuator/modulator, this is in the engine bay, it has a cable connected to throttle, and a vacuum hose connected to intake manifold, the Brain adjusts vacuum level to pull throttle open and closed to keep speed pulse within set range.

3. User interface, the buttons to turn cruise on/off, set speed, increase/decrease and resume, this connects to the Brain.

A 3rd party cruise kit for a 2008 Ranger will/should have details on wire colors to splice into at various points in the cab making it a much easier install.

If you want factory then best bet is to find a 2008 Ranger with cruise at wrecking yard, then start stripping the parts needed.
