Black smoke with hot engine

Hi All,
Im a newbie here looking for a bot of advice please.
Ive had a diesel PX1 for 6 years and it's done 110, 000kms and it's hardly missed a beat until this week... Black smoke pouring out of the exhaust under load which is noticeable more with a hot engine.
it had a new EGR last year.
The engine idles perfect with no missfires and I can still hear the turbo whistle when it should with no abnormal noises anywhere. Is it worth trying cleaner additives?
The Air filter seems fine and I've tried running without it for a test with no change.
My son has just started driving and he may have driven it a bit harder than me!
Any ideas please before I part with $1000's here in NZ for a mechanic.
Thanks
Steve.
