I have a 2wd 1999 Ranger. I went to the dealership to order new drums. He asked do I have the 9" or the 10 ". I said I don't know. He gave me a measuring tape to go measure. I measured 10" at the backing plate (the only part I could get to in the parking lot)

I told him the backing plate measured 10" but I could not actually measure the drum. He said if the backing plate is 10" then the drum is 10". So I ordered the 10".

After I got home I pulled the wheel off and the drums are 9" ID on the drums.

So unless I can stop the order I am the proud owner of $300 worth of 10" brake drums and shoes.

Question: Is it possible to convert it from 9" to 10"?

 

replace everything from the backing plate outward....or try and stop them from ordering the parts....i'm surprised they couldn't tell you the size of brakes from your trucks info.

 

Yeah, you'll need everything that's inside the drum from a 10" drum axle, just stop the order.

yeah you could convert to 10" but that will cost you even more.
should have been like $200 tops, for drums and shoes.

Should have gone to Autozone or Checker. Drums cost me $60 I think. Cancel the order man.

You could have done a mustang rear disc brake swap for that price!

 

I replaced the drums a years ago with Autozone parts. They have gone bad again and I was tired of dealing with the rear brakes. I have heard a lot of people say that "Fords usually like Ford parts", so I thought I would give it a try.

I should have remembered, from doing the brakes last year, what size they are.

This was the last time I was going to deal with this truck due to many problems with it. If this doesn't fix it I will get rid of it. This was supposed to be a quick job.

 

if you have everything you just need backing plates. gonna need to pull the axles to put them on. so get some axle seals and lube and go to town dont forget gray RTV for the diff cover

 

ford drums suck always actually what sucks is the wheel cylinders there horrible doesnt matter the brand.


this goes for anyone. find COOPER aint-seize very important is cooper its high temp, remove the pistons on the wheel cylinders lightly coat with cooper snize and put back in before install. old dude taught me that one makes them last longer
