how tuff are rangers?
well i am just curious about how rough you can be on these things without tearin em up. i know a manual tranny is better for off road cause a auto sucks dirt up into it and dont come out. but how much off roadin can you do without brakin somethin? i got a 07 fx4 off road auto and its my everyday vehicle. just curious to know if tearin up a mud hole every weekend is goin to brake it.

rocks and torsion bar covers don't play well....
I very recently had a stick, rock, something attack some wires on circuit 140, resulting in wire damage and giving me a CEL of P0446 - evap system malfunction.
I'll let the mud guys chime in about playing in water and engines.
BFG ATs and New Mexico mud =

The only problems that I have had with my truck has been from things that I have caused myself. I bent a rear axle, because I hit a deep hole doing donuts in a cow pasture. Also I hydro-locked my motor going through a foot deep creek fast. The good thing is the ford place fixed them both under warranty.

Tuff enough I t-boned a s-10 x-cab at about 50 mph and hit it so hard I blew the windows out of it. All my 04 xl suffered was bumper wraped around tires, slightly bent hood and blew both air bags. Wasn't that bad, it scared the crap out of the kid who cut in front of me and found out the hard way a 4cyl s10 wont get out of its own way.

It isn't really a question of how tough rangers are, so much as how smart the drivers are.
I see more Gen 1/ 2/ and 3 ranger son the road then I do of other makers trucks in the same age.
So i would say rangers are very reliable and sturdy when used as they were meant to be.
If you are wondering wether or not you can take yours offroad, it depends on the terrain. Dirt and gravel roads are fine. But anything more and you might want to get some skid plates on.

There Rangers, They are built Ford Tough!!!
Seriously tho, I have put my ranger thru more sh*t that I have any of my other vehicles, I fly down chuck hole infested dirt roads, tow and haul way more than the vehicle is rated, and the truck is still perfect. I would have to say, after 63,ooo miles and this being my first Ford, they are as tough if not tougher than anything out there (at least for size and price).

ive beat the crap out of mine, bent the frame in 3-4 places, bent the springs, spring hangers, driveshaft... etc
towed 7800lbs and under many miles... 3-4 trips over 1000 miles each way.
numerous trips to Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Indy, etc...
and im still driving mine everyday. granted i have replaced a far share of parts but im still pretty impressed with it as a truck so far.

You have to think how tough is a truck that has a following like the ranger. I mean I don't know are there any other trucks that have so many forums as the ranger does.
Something else to keep in mind it is a truck and was meant to be used as a truck that means it will take some off roading. But driving it into 40 inches of water or taking it through a mud whole repeatedly is just asking for somehting to break. Water and mud don't mix well with steel, grease, and electrical items. So if you are going to play be prepared to pay.
All in all you will only know how much it can take untill you break something only then will you know its limits. IT IS A TRUCK DRIVE IT LIKE A TRUCK!

While working over the summer at a construction site I was careless and tried to go around some huge truck that was blocking the road in to the site. Well everything looked good on the side of the road but I ended up putting my front left wheel into a foot and a half hole with a metal pipe coming out of it. My truck went into the whole and came right back out. I must have been going 15 mph. Nearly hit my head on the ceiling of my truck hitting that hole. I thought for sure I broke something or tore up my stock pos tires but nope. I ended up bending the pipe but nothing else. You hit that hole in a car and it would have had some damage for sure. Love my truck!!!
