Mechanic says I need coil pack, wires and plugs.

Hello,

2001 ranger 2.3 liter 179k miles. Runs rough when I first start it but quickly smooths out. Cleaned out MAF, new air and fuel filter , intake cleaned out ran techtron 2x.

Mechanic says needs new coil pack (almost 3 years old), new wires, (switched them last week) and new plugs (about 20k miles on them).

He said no vacuum leaks. I was worried as the symptoms sound like EGR issue.

Does this diagnosis sound like they are being accurate? I get skeptical as some garages will just tell everyone to change the above mentioned without even poking around. He did say the wires were not very good.

Your thoughts please before I go ahead and change pack, wires (again ) and plugs.

Thanks in advance

I agree with Deadranger, I put new plugs, wires and coilpack on my 03' 2.3 and it made a world of difference in the way it ran. In my case it was worth the money.

What brand plugs did you install ?
Ford engines play the nicest with motocraft or autolites only.

I am having a similar problem. I just recently had my spark plugs, wires, and one of the coils changed. I am running the autolite irridiums now. I was running the bosch platinums, and my truck was running fine until the last tune up. I double checked all the plugs and wires this morning, and I installed a new purge valve and solenoid, and now it seems as though my truck is running even rougher. Any help?
