1999 Ranger with this stereo. Can it run an external Ford multi CD changer?

Scrambler82 08-12-2011 06:26 PM

IMHO… No !

It has to be a CD6 Version to take more than one but not more than six CDs.

I know it can physically hold only one but the owners manuel refers to Multi-CD Changer if equipped. Problem is they show generic drawings of various model factoy units to include this.
My Mustang had a similar unit...one in the dash, 10 in the external changer all controlled by the factory radio.
So this one cannot run an external?

Chk out the Radio Face and look for the term "CD6".
If you do not see it term it has to be a STD "1" CD Player.

I think he knows the radio itself only holds 1 disc, but he's looking at whether or not an external changer can be used with that head unit.

I don't know myself... but I'm guessing it will. My uncle has used an external one for years and keeps swapping it into his new vehicles as he gets them. It's been in an Explorer, Windstar, Freestar and his latest '10 F-150.

double post... delete!

Do you already have the external CD player? If not it might be cheaper just to buy a in dash 6 disc. I bought one for like $50 and swapped mine out. Just a thought.

Scrambler82 08-14-2011 05:53 PM

OK new direction then.
Does the Player have a large connector on the rear, maybe 20 pins or so, similar to the CD6 Radios from Ford ?

If you have the large conenctor then a Ford external CD Player can be use.
If no large connector then an after market one needs to be used.

A friend of mine has the same radio in his '99 Ranger Sport, he has the 6 CD changer in back cab area. He bought it used so we don't know if it was installed at the factory or not. I agree with Scrambler, check and count the Pin Connectors at the back of the radio, a Ford Factory Wiring Manual may help in determining the compatibility with factory/aftermarket CD players.
Good luck!

I have yet to open the dash but think that Scrambler82 answered this.
Nope! No CD# just CD

I like to use factory because idiots wont break in to steel it. Then I push it. The F350 runs 1500WPC. Double dog dare ya to find the amp
