In the dark about motor oil
so what is the deal with motor oil, i just changed the oil in my truck and i used what i alwas use, shell rotella T synthetic 5w-40 anyhow when i was calling around to find someone that carried it(wally world was out) the guy at autozone said he wouldnt use that in a gas engine... wonder why he said that? an i using the wrong oil...
i did notice it was pretty black when it came out today... i change it every 5000 miles and from what i have read i think thats really conservitive.. i have heard people go ALOT longer than that...
anyhow just wondering if someone can shed some light...

idk what the number difference really is but ive never heard of anyone running 5w-40.
shell rotella T atleast to me is more know to run in diesels. idk if that is true or not but that guy may have been under the same impression.
i use Mobil 1 5w-30 Extended Performance and it is good till 15k but i change it around or just after 10k

5w-30 is what I use in the winter. 10w-30 in the summer. I wouldn't use 40 either. Not sure what the consequences are (coughGooglecough). I too Use Mobil 1. Not the fancy extended one because the regular Mobil 1 Synthetic can go 18k and be ok. I do my changes in the 7-10k range. Use a good full synthetic like Mobil 1 or Amsoil and you'll never go back to conventional.

ok after reading some its is ok to prolly use 5w-40 as it is just for engines that get hotter for more protection. but you dont need it and going to thick prolly isnt good for some things. i would recommend changing back to what it says in the book to use and that is 5w-30.

i also was doing some googling, and i found out that it is probally ok to run shell rotella T in the ranger, but gas millage will suffer slightly, and it could posibly hurt the cats.. not sure how...
i think ill do an oil chang in 3000miles and change up to a differant synthetic...
is motorcraft oil any good? i saw it at wally worl today, the have a motorcraft sythetic...

according to my buddy at ford/toyota, you are supposed to used 5w-20 on newer (01+) rangers, at least durring the winter
ive got 5w-30 in mine now, and when i start it up after the weather being under 5deg or so, ill have no oil pressure till it warms up
*edit* this is all Non-synthetic and semi-synthetic

actually ive read reports that the more you change your oil the harder it is on the engine to an extent. i mean you still need regualr oil changes but if you got to 5k or 10k it would be better on it. if your oil is rated for it.

First off its perfectly fine to use the 5w-40 rotella T.
Second the 4.0 requires 5w-30 not 5w-20.
Yes you might lose .1mpg by using the rotella t.
It has a more robust additive package for diesels but IS
API SL certified for use in gas engines..
It also happens to be Diesel certified too API CI-4+
This is all from memory.. yes I have to much time on my hands.
Summary.. Its good oil dont be afraid to use it.
Even Mobil 1's "truck and suv" oil is 5w-40
Dont listen to any stories about 40weight being evil either
they mostly stem from the old 10w-40 crap oil that would break down
and sludge up from the viscosity improvers when idiots would leave it in
for 10000+ miles.
Edit it has been shown with several studies its possible that FREQUENT
oil changes to produce more wear metals.
With a good syn oil like rotella T.. I would go at the minimum 5000 miles or 6monthes. Its a waste to change any sooner.
Note there are many different "rotella t" oils the most popular
are the syn 5w-40, and the Regular 15w40

You are a total moron if:
-You think frequent oil changes is detrimental to your engine.
-You run more than 3000 miles on ANY oil.
-You think fancy, expensive, synthetic oil doesn't contaminate because it has "detergents" in it.
I have heard some of the stupidest crap from people on the topic of oil here. I am appauled at how stupid someone could be to say stuff like...
"With a good syn oil like rotella T.. I would go at the minimum 5000 miles or 6monthes. Its a waste to change any sooner."

Heres a good one
"but if you got to 5k or 10k it would be better on it"
The only GOOD thing I have seen in here is this...
"i would NEVER go more than 3000 miles on an oil change, i maybe wasting money but i feel that is more than enough mile on oil"
