i've never had a spring on mine, i like it better that way because without one it doesn't snap around as much, so theres less of a chance of it hitting your truck. But i'm sure theres a good reason people have springs and i'm sure someone will chime in about it.

To do it correctly, you need a whip, th BIG spring, and a ball mount.

i have mounted whips on those mirror brackets, but once i had a whip on a spring and ball mount of my samauri and it ROASTED...

you can run a whip like you're talking about, but if you're goign to be doing any type of off roading, get a spring. it'l save it from being bent.

^ yea its mainly a insurance factor to help make sure it doesnt bend or even snap off which some have done. i was at a pay-and-spray car wash and i pulled in and the damn door started to shut and my whip was langing on it as it started to go down and i didnt catch it in tim and it bend it all the way to the ground from my bedrail...but i opened it up and it was still good. mine has never hit my truck when i have it fully extended, however, it likes to tap my roof every once and a while when i have it pulled down humvee style

get the spring, as said before, your antenna won't brake if you go under a 7 ft clearance and forget that it is up. The only time mine has hit my truck was doing that (7ft clearence bar at the mall, went under it doing 20mph) it swung around and hit my tail gate protector, but it made no serious damage.
