CEL Problem..

I'm wondering why my CEL isn't illuminated even though there is a fault code present. The fault didn't resolve itself and clear the code or anything, and the CEL will illuminate and stay solid while I have ignition in in position.

Anyone know what's up with this? I'd hate to have some other fault code appear and not know about it, and I don't really really want to hook up the scanner all the time just to check for codes

What year Ranger?
So EEC-IV or EEC-V computer

Not all codes require immediate attention, which is what the CEL is for
CEL comes on when computer thinks driver needs to check on a system sooner than later
Emissions codes usually turn on CEL
Air/fuel mix, misfires most engine sensors usually turn on CEL, but these need to be repeated a few times, they are set as "pending" until repeated

Other codes are just stored in memory and stay there for about 40 drive cycles and are then cleared if they do not repeat
