Front parking brake cable broken at pedal

There's only about 4 inches of cable past the metal knuckle that can be manipulated. Didn't know if someone might know a trick to this. Thanks in advance.
You have to remove the whole pedal assembly. There are three bolts and a small screw that hold the electrical switch in place. Also remove two push tabs holding the switch wire to the pedal assy. Bracket. To get the piece of cable out, use needle nose vice grips to pull (hard) on the cable to turn the gear around thereby exposing the cable retainer slot. There is i hole on the other side of the bracket. Use a screw driver to slide through the hole and under the gear. This must be done while pulling on the piece of cable with the vice grips. It’s a rear bear! Once the screw driver is in place, the cable tension is relieved. Push the cable back through the mechanism and pull back the opposite direction. It should be able to slide out through the slot. The new cable is installed the same way, spring must be disengaged. I’m doing this repair now, so I have only gotten this far. I hope this will help someone. Good luck!

Parking brake cables are definitely not interchangeable between all rangers. Automatic vs. manual doesn't matter, but wheelbase and the size of your rear drums are important, as well as the build date of your truck (occasionally).

What happens a lot of times is this: the rear cables have a plastic coating on them that frays/cracks over time right where they enter the housing. Water gets in and rusts and expands the cables, which then become hard to move in and out of the housing. This can either render your brakes useless (won't engage the brake), but more likely will cause the brakes to drag and wear out your shoes.

Moral: replace the rear cables, as it is often the problem, particularly if they look old and you're rebuilding the drum brakes. That's all!
thank you. I just got a beat up 99 ford ranger. Super helpful, many years later
