I've finally gotten the free time to work on John (N3elz)'s electric fan controller. His directions call to hook it up to a red/white wire coming from the fire wall which will have a fluctuating voltage around 4.5v. I have found two red/white wires, one with a low voltage and one with a voltage of 5.2v. The fan isn't working with either one, it just stays on, so I am wondering if I have it hooked up to the right wire. I know the wiring became screwy in 2004, so can anybody help me out here?

 

I think 1 of the wires is for the neutral gear selector. but you have a manual. i know if its in neutral the fan will run.

I went out there and gave it another test. Here is what I came up with between the two red/white wires:

.. LEFT RIGHT
OFF 4.99v 0v
ON/COLD 5.01v 1.10v
ON/HOT 5.01v 2.35v

It would make sense if it were the right wire, however the voltage is a bit low, and I had thought the voltage was supposed to drop with the heat, not raise. I'm stumped.

 

I doubt he'd say he knows everything, however he does know alot. He's been very busy as of late, and I've already called him today to get this far, I don't want to interrupt again tonight.

 

left right? is that the two different wires? is that in columns? or what? if so its not the right wire.

 

Sorry to... be more clear, there are two wires that are red/white coming through the firewall. They enter into a plastic clip with one on the left, and one on the right. That is just how I was telling the two apart.

 

it has to be the one on the left, how hot was it?

btw dont turn those pots!

 

For my cold test, the gauge was about 1/8 of the normal temperature, for the hot test, it was right about in the middle, which is the normal temperature. I don't know how to use my programmer to figure out what the actual temperature was.

I did actually turn the pots, but I put them back to the same position they were in. Why would I not turn them?

 

the pots are the adjustment for when they turn the fan off and on.

 

I understand that, but I have the feeling I am going to have to mess around with them in order to get the fan to work correctly.

you had your hvac in the off position right?

 

I don't have that wire hooked up, I disconnected the purple wre from the hvac a long time ago.

The pods were set up correctly for a 01-03 Ranger. Mine has the stupid 04 wiring, so there could be different voltages we're working with here.

 

possible but he said it would work with an 04 right?
