P0340 camshaft position sensor A circuit malfunction

I have this code on my 1997 Ranger 3.0 V6 engine. 1st: It is a camshaft position sensor A circuit malfunction-could be a short?!?!?
2nd: Where is this located? I cannot find it in my Chilton manual!!! I must be stupid but I cannot find it! Anyway, what can I check for since it is a circuit malfunction or should I just get the sensor changed? I heard this is one of the more difficult services to perform but I also hear this is basically the new version of the distributor!?!?!? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
This sight rocks!!!!! Thanks!

The CMP sensor itself is a small Hall Effect sensor and mounts on top of a housing with a right angle drive off of the camshaft where the distributor used to be on earlier versions of your engine. The housing assembly is called a Synchronizer and a special tool is required to time it to the camshaft. BUT if the Synchronizer is not disturbed while changing the CMP, it will probably not need to to be retimed.

It could just be an open or short, so you should inspect the wiring first. There is not much to look at though since 2 of the CMP wires go directly to the PCM without any intermediate plug connectors and the third wire goes to chassis ground.

I would definately get this fixed guys. if this goes out, this "synchronizer" actually drives your oil pump. you will want to replace the sensor and the synchronizer. Be prepared to spend 150 - 200 for the parts.

CMP = Cam Position Sensor
CKP = Crank Position Sensor

They use magnetic sensors to detect the position of the crank and cam to properly time ignition primarily.

They're pretty important, and best not to be ignored.

The sensor isn't part of the oil pump drive, but the mechanical assembly it's part of is. If it's just the sensor itself (most likely), then your lubrication isn't in danger.
