Check Engine Flashing - Ongoing Issue :(

:headache:

So I need some help guys. :( A few weeks ago I started getting cylinder 6 misfire check engine. So first thing I did was change out my spark plug in cylinder 6. All the plugs were changed about 2-3 months ago, so I figured I would just change that one. It was off for about a day and back on again. So I went and got a new coil pack. Stayed off for about 2 days and came back again, so I changed the wires. Stayed off for a couple days and now it's back. So I took spark plug out of cylinder 6 and 5 and switch the plugs to see if my scangauge would catch cylinder 5 misfire this time. Check engine comes on but only blinks and usually when I'm idle at a red light. As soon as I hit the gas it goes off. I feel it idling rough when the light comes on. But as soon as I accelerate it goes off. It won't go solid at all for me to catch a code on the SG, therefor I don't know what's misfiring and I've changed everything.

Help?

sounds like something pretty serious, if its flashing that means immediate problem, solid is minor, but i have no idea sorry lol

i've got the same kind of issue. i was thinking maybe it's a coil pack or something like that. i'll let you know if i figure my issue out.

thats what i tried to tell him but apparently it wasnt good enough

It drives fine though, it doesn't misfire and idle weird all the time. It's sporadic. Mostly when I'm at a stop light. Drives fine otherwise, just a lil rough when it wants to trigger the check engine light.

Makes no sense. :(

For sure bro, I changed mine out but maybe the new one is bad too?

chevyslayer925 Jun 22, 2009 10:06 PM

i dont think its a spark issue. If it does it at idle and not at open throttle thats more of a air/fuel problem i would think. or the timing is off.

tonyz Jun 22, 2009 10:13 PM

it most likely is the coil pack i know you replaced it but i had the same problem and it was a bad coil pack

Prerunner-Ranger Jun 22, 2009 10:14 PM

Hmm I think I'll change the coilpack out again.

A flashing CEL means its an active misfire. hence it runs like **** when the light is on.

tonyz Jun 22, 2009 10:17 PM

when you said you changed plug 6 to 5 did you switch the plug wire ???

SB05EDGE Jun 22, 2009 10:22 PM

check the fuel injectors

99ranger4x4 Jun 22, 2009 10:23 PM

refresh my memory.. where are 5 and 6? are they across from each other?

chainfire Jun 22, 2009 10:26 PM

They are parallel

On my 3.0 6 is on the driver side back, closest to the firewall and 5 is right next to it.

It doesn't idle rough all the time, just sometimes when I'm chillin at a red light with my A/C or something it will start blinking then turn off when I accelerate and not come back on for an hour, or 2, or 3, or a day.... hence sporadic.... blah

tonyz Jun 22, 2009 10:35 PM

firing order 1-4-2-5-3-6 from front
1 should be on the driver side

tonyz Jun 22, 2009 10:37 PM

you have 3.0 mfi motor right ??

Prerunner-Ranger Jun 22, 2009 10:45 PM

So your saying cylinder 6 is on passenger side back closest to the firewall?

If that's the case then Mr. Christian gave me wrong info :(

Prerunner-Ranger Jun 22, 2009 10:45 PM

2002 3.0 V6

tonyz Jun 22, 2009 10:47 PM

yes if you have 3.0 mfi engine got the firing order right out of shop manual
