Clock spring

Ok, this is another one for all the electrical & tecnichal gurus out there, is there any interchangeability of clock springs from one model to another, i.e., aerostar, or something else to the Ranger? Ihave a '95 stepside 4X4, and the clockspring is wasted and cannot find a listing for a replacement anywhere.
Sorry for the long post, hope someonr can help. TIA, Jim

What's a clock spring?

Calranger 12-28-2007 03:42 PM

Its the gizmo behind the steering wheel that gets the electrical power to the horn button, etc. Jim

Is there anybody out there?

Check with a Ford dealer for the correct clockspring. There are probably 2 different models for your year Ranger, w/cruise or w/o. The clockspring from the same year Explorer with the same options is probably the same but I can't guarantee it.

Bob's the closest thing to a clockspring expert we have since he's actually messed with them and changed them out. I really don't know anything about them other than what he's told me, lol.

You may have to try a salvage yard if you can't find the "clock spring".

Is that what Ford really calls the spring contact for the slip ring in the steering wheel?

Calranger 12-29-2007 06:17 PM

Yes that's what it's called, and basically, it's just a long (approx 3 ft.) multi-strand very flexible flat ribbon wire, that is easily broken if the steering wheel is turned too far i.e. without the steering gear attached. I bought this thing as a wreck, and am slowly getting her road worthy.
