My OHC keeps resetting its self while I'm going down the road. Its not all the time but atleast twice in 10mins. The screen lights up all lights, goes off for a second then comes back to normal. WTF

 

Sounds like a loose connection. How did you splice in the wires in the install? Scotch-locks, solder or twist-and-tape?

I've had hit-and-miss success with those. Gotta pay attention to wire-gauge, for sure (I've seen 2 or 3 colors for different gauges). How did you ground it? Separate ground or bolted to the roof?

If it is wired correctly could be a loose capacitor. This capacitor is used for the screen lighting. I saw a how to on it on http://www.explorerforum.com. Just have to resolder the connection. A good way to test is to push on the middle button really hard next time it goes off and it should relight the screen. This should put pressure on it to make the connection. If I find it I will post it.

 

It restarts on its own, it just takes a second.

I have repaired a similar display problem in 2 Explorer dual media radios by renewing the solder joints - very common.

As far the console goes, it seems that lots of owners have that failure but the vast majority are Explorer owners. Obviously, by comparison, the Ranger console conversions are a tiny fraction. I have only heard of a couple others in Rangers and I think those were resolved by replacing the junkyard console with another from a junkyard.

 

Go ahead and add me to the list of Ranger owners that this has happened to. Mine started doing it tonight.

 

Using the information provided in this link I was able to repair mine. Thanks Bob. I had a desoldered resistor and a bad capacitor. The location of the problem was easy to see as the board was discolored from heat and a leaking capacitor. Unfortunately when I tried to resolder the resistor one of the pads came off the board. I traced the connections for the resistor, found new connection points and soldered a 1/4 watt 160 ohm resistor between those locations. The SMD resistor I replaced was a 160 ohm (labeled 161).

 

Mine still flashes even with the 510 resistors resoldered!

 

I would try resoldering them and check the connections with an Ohmmeter
