DIY Alternator Rebuild?

I picked up a used alt at a junk yard 6 months ago. My question... Since I have the old alt can I rebuild it myself? I've looked but I can't seem to find a rebuild kit at the box stores. Anyone have any sources or info? The bearings are all good. It just quit charging when the motor was at anything over 1500 rpms.

I'd tear it down and inspect/test the Stator, field, commutator rings, and rectifier Bridge. If there in good condition, a simple clean-up of the commutator rings (with the proper glass bead sand paper) and a new set of brushes/voltage regulator should do it. If the vehicle has mileage, I'd also recommend new bearings.

The brush/regulator and bearings should be stocked at most auto parts houses. The rest might be special order or dealer only.

Sounds like a plan. This will be my first rebuild of an alt. But I'm fairly mechanically inclined and have an electronics background so i figure what is the worse that could happen? It still doesn't work.

I am all for doing thing myself but everything now-a-days is a replace it if not working.
Good luck on rebuilding the alternator.
