Door Switch Wiring
2003 Ranger Supercab 4.0L V6:
My door ajar light has been on since I bought the truck second hand afew months ago, and I had the courtesy light bulbs out to save the power. Decided to have a go at fixing it, and yeah I've tried spraying the latch with WD-40. Couple questions: Anyone know the wire colours for the switches? Are there even switches on the suicide doors? Yes, if it has 4 doors that open each will have it's own switch, but only drivers door has dedicated wire for door ajar, not that it matters, lol, but can save some time if you check it first. Each switch is Grounded When a door is OPEN that Ground goes to GEM(generic electronic module) and it then turns on Door Ajar light and dome light So Closed door = No Ground at GEM Drivers door Ground goes to GEM pin 13 Other 3 doors Ground GEM pin 14 Pin 13 also does the "keys in ignition" or "Head lights ON" warning chime when drivers door is opened, which is why it has separate pin If your drivers door chime works, door open and goes off door closed then drivers door switch is probably OK Now because Ground = Door Ajar light a switch wire that is worn and touching bare metal would trigger door ajar light If you disconnect a failed switch, then no Ground and no door ajar light Wiring diagram below, the 4 switches are shown in the Door Closed position, OPEN, not grounded |

@RonD: Just curious; what do you use for your service manual info? I have the 2000 - 2004 Ford Service DVD and it, quite frankly, sucks. It's missing things, some stuff is duplicated and I just have to futz around with it to get anything at all out of it. Looking for something better.

My latest ranger, a 2000 supercab, has the door chime ringing with the door open, but no key inserted and ignition in off and key removal position. A friend who checked said it had something to do with no push pin on door frame, but the latching system was causing this. Could someone please explain this to me and how to shut it up.:confused::boggled:

There is a small contact up by the ignition switch that grounds when the key is inserted into the switch. If that is grounding all the time, the system will think the key is in the ignition switch. That may be the problem. Does everything else function as expected?

No "push pin" in that year, there is a switch in each door on the latch mechanism that is grounded when door is opened. Each door wire runs to GEM module and it runs the chime, chime is often inside the GEM There is a separate wire that mhoward described that also runs from key cylinder to GEM, which activates chime if grounded If dome light and "door ajar" lights are working OK then key cylinder wire will be the problem, not a door switch |
dome light does work, and door ajar for that side doesnt. I had changed the ignition cylinder from a truck that did not chime, so I would think its not the problem, just in case could you explain that in more detail? The wire to the GEM was not connected on the old cylinder and still kept chiming, and I would be very happy if it did not chime at all.
