Fuel sender testing

OK, so when I bought it, fuel gauge was over 1/4. Drove a few miles, maybe 30 or so, fuel gauge dropped to zero, fuel light on. Filled tank. Gauge reads over full, have driven 120 miles and no change on gauge. Gauge does a sweep from below empty (key off) to over full (key on) which makes me think sending unit faulty. Looks like 2 options to replace, 1. remove tank, 2. slide bed back. Don't like either of those but.....can't get to the harness on top of the tank to test. Is there another test point on the truck for the sender?

Yes, the 2005 Ranger will have an HEC instrument cluster, which means it has a small 'computer' inside, micrprocessor.

Follow directions in this PDF: http://www.carlogic.org/bg/data/Ford...ler%20mode.pdf

Also google: ford hec test mode

For more detailed directions

My cluster does't seem to have that function. Just a single line for digital od readout. Since the original post, gauge has moved off over full to 3/4 after 150 miles.
