Is dual exhaust bad?

Well ive heard things that if you do, that you lose power, but then again i dunno. I have a 99 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0 v6. I have seen many trucks with dual exhaust, and i like the look. Im just worried about losing alot of power. Tbh, i dont take it offroading or anything like that, but i do speed :P. Im probably going to buy a flowmaster and then a friend said he can get it installed and all for less than 100, but not sure if more since im thinking of dual exhaust. Also im still not even fully sure on whats good about redoing the exhaust pipes and muffler. Better gas mileage, power? haha im a nub with vehicles.....So can i have some opinions, suggestions, ect ect.

this is really the only image i can find, but i kind of want a setup like that.

thank you for reading.

I had a SI/DO flowmaster 40. It was VERY loud. Some kids told me it sounded like an 8. IDK. It was just loud to me. I made the mistake of going 3.0" in 2.5" out. Mistake, big mistake. Much to big and I lost a ton of torque. Zero to 60 times increased.
Changed to 2.25" in 2.0 out Magnaflow. Got most of the torque back, and I liked the sound better. Zero to 60 still a bit slower than stock, but nothing to worry about. Either muffler is fine depending on your taste in noise. (loudness) Just keep pipe size to a max of 2"-2.25" and you'll be fine.

DELTA FLOW 40 SERIES PERFORMANCE MUFFLERS - JCWhitney

well i was thinking of this one, but i dont understand the ends. am i able to do dual exhaust if i wanted to on this muffler? if not, the other way i want to do my exhaust is probably in the same place behind the back tire, but like dual tips. and if i do, do dual exhaust, is there any difference if power or whatever?which is better?

Current exhaust:

EDIT:

id love to have this sound on my truck if i could :P. think since its a 40 series as well, should sound the same

i plan to do flow 50's just to keep it a little quieter... when you refer to dual exhaust, are you talking about dual tips, or true dual? true dual, you will need more cat's, and 2 mufflers, you could go with an h or x pipe, but it's up to you... dual tips, are for show only, won't make any noticable difference in performance, y pipe after the muffler...

true dual won't make any difference in your performance as long as it is done properly... if you don't change the backpressure, it shouldn't make a difference...

well im not too sure. i think im seeing like a Y from that pic i linked in the 1st post. i kind of want to go for looks, but at the same time i dont want to make my truck worse. ive seen trucks with dual put on and looks sweet. im not too good on what the y or true is, but true sounds expensive. Y seems to be cheaper, and match the flowmaster 40 series slot i guess....

ok, here is how we are going to do this... lol

x pipe (true dual with x pipe)

h pipe (true dual with h pipe) almost the same as above, but where they meet it is different

true dual (there are 2 completely independant pipes from front to back)

y pipe exhaust

flowmaster 80 series exhaust (bottom left pipe is inlet, bottom right is for one exhaust tip, top right is other exhaust tip) this is made spesifically for camaro's

side pipe exhaust (usually one on each side)

stack exhaust

can't think of any more types, if anyone thinks of any, i'll post them up

I love my SI/SO Magnaflow exhaust kit. Not to loud and does not sound like I was trying to buy a V8. Easy to install myself.

well i was thinking of doing the Y, but not with 2 mufflers or whatever, just a Y and the muffler at the bottom of the y. probably cheapest, but what would be best for dual exhaust for my ranger?3.0 v6 and all. brother was saying something about inspections and being harder or something?i dunno....but im probably going with flowmaster 40 series, love the agressive sound :P. i want to try and get the best out of this, and well not have to pay alot as well. i know it all depends on the people for that, but yeah maybe some estimates on parts and all

a si/do muffler is probably your cheapest bet (single in/dual out) and then new pipes after that... it doesn't make much of a difference, as long as it's set up properly for your truck... i know on my bikes, if you change the exhaust, you are supposed to get the carbs tuned so they don't run rich... but i don't know if this can be done in a efi motor...

the main reason most lose HP with any system is by using the wrong size tubing, most go way to big. theres no need for 2.5" or 3" tailpipes on a 3.0 or 4.0 V6. if you purchase a system from a good company like magnaflow, flowmaster ect you wont have to worry about maching the system to your truck becuase they are designed for your truck. i have some sounds clips of my setup if you want me to post them.

It doesn't matter if you go single or duals...you will lose power with Slowmasters...

Keep same pipe dia and go with a si/do muffler, you`ll be fine. I have a true dual exhaust (x-pipe, flow 44`s exiting before left and right rear tires) and lost some low-end torque.

nah, screw the muffler, just chop of your exhaust behind the cat and run it like that.... lmao!!

when i bought my truck, the exhaust was completely rotted. removed it with my hands thats how bad it was... either way, drove to my fiancee father shop to install new one and the sound with just a cat was sweet. nice and throaty...

I hear "You need backpressure to make torque." all the time. And it even comes from "tuners": This is flat out not true. The reality is that backpressure is the enemy. You want to keep it as low as possible. What you do want is to keep velocity up. However doing the things that keep velocity high involves slightly more backpressure under some conditions. You want to keep the gasses moving as quickly as possible to make both good torque and top end power. The perfect exhaust system would keep the gasses moving as fast as they did coming out of the cylinder and have zero backpressure. However this is impossible to achieve in the real world.

My conclusions are...you don't want more going out then coming in. In other words...don't outflow your HP/TQ lvl. I have 2.5 on my car which is perfect for my needs.

ok, think im understanding now. so SI is the the end that points towards the front, then the DO is 2 holes 1 for each pipe instead of the Y?
