EEC question

I was given a 86 4x4 with a 2.9l. I've been having issues when the truck gets to operating temp (engine cuts out, no power) I found similar problems described on a bronco website. Anyway I'm trying to find out what EEC's are compatible with the one I have. Mine is EEC-IV. E6TF-12A650-C2B
EFI-5D6 1444- 676 6EC2336A11
Anyone know what will work?

Welcome to the forum

Its most likely not a computer issue, its the TFI module, these are a "known" issue, failing when they get warm, its on the side of the distributor

But here is the computer stuff
E6TF-12A650-C2B

E6 = 1986, E is 198, F is 199, so a 1995 computer would start with F5
T = Truck, this can also be a 7 for Ranger, in later years
F = electronics department

12A650 = Ford part number for an engine computer, a 2022 Ford car would have this same part number for its computer, so NOT vehicle specific

C2B is an important one but Ford never released a cross reference for these number
Its a firmware designation for engine size, transmission(manual or Auto), emissions(EGR, no EGR)

Look here: https://www.tweecer.com/images/CCHW.JPG

The numbers circled in Yellow is the Software that was loaded onto the computer at the factory when it was made, also important and also never cross referenced by Ford, lol

So all that said, what you need to do to get another computer is to match YOUR VEHICLES version
2.9l engine
Manual trans, or Automatic
EGR or no EGR
These 3 things must match

2WD or 4x4 doesn't matter to computer, separate system

1986 to 1989 2.9l Ranger or B2 would be best years, but some have EGR and some didn't
If your 1986 2.9l has an EGR Valve you CAN USE a non-EGR computer, no issues, but not the other way around, EGR computer needs to "see" the EGR electrics

Fusible Link

I have a 1989 ford ranger 2.9 4x4. I was having no start no crank, disconnected the sprout connector and was able to get start with a push button start.

I am trying to find the fusible link because my ignition key is still not working and once the sprout is install the truck shuts down.

Is it in the engine bay passenger side by fuse box or is it in the truck by the ECM by the passenger side kick panel?

Do the head lights work?

When you turn on the key do the dash lights come on?
If not then you could have a bad ignition switch, not an uncommon issue on the 1980's Ford trucks
Ignition switch is under the steering column above brake pedal
The key uses a ROD inside the column to move the ignition switch into its 4 positions, ACC, OFF, RUN, START
These switch like to crack/split, can sometimes be repaired with a "zapstrap"....sometimes

But first check for power(12v)
On the inner fender is the Starter RELAY(often mispronounced "starter solenoid", lol)
In any case, follow the Battery positive cable to a larger post on this starter relay
That post is the 12volt power distribution for the WHOLE vehicle
There will be several wires on this post, most of them are Fusible links
You need to peel off the wire loom/tape to expose these wires and fusible links, fusible link is a smaller gauge wire and 4" to 6" long, it connects to a larger gauge wire that goes to the "device" that needs 12volts, if too many amps try to pass thru the smaller gauge "link" it "burns out" cutting off the power, acts like a "slow blow" fuse, prevents "smoke show" from a shorted 12v wire or device
ALL the fusible links are there at that one post on starter relay

Disconnect battery cable
Remove these wires from the post and clean them
Popular Fusible link wire colors are Green, Blue, Brown and BLACK, yes black for a 12volt wire

thanks Renoenvy,

I havent check the eec yet, just visually. did you have a way to diagnose the EEC?

Online i found some postings reading a low voltage PIP signal to the TFI. i tried a new distributor with TFI with no luck. Know parts can be shipped f**k up.

truck runs with spout out but once connected completely shuts off.
