New Trailer Harness

New Trailer Harness
I just bought a used 5x8 trailer last night. Of course it was 20 degrees out and late at night, and i had to work by flashlight to work on getting my trailer harness to work.
But after 30 mins I gave up and just drove the trailer home for 2hrs without tags or working lights. LUCKILY, i wasn't pulled over.
So I haven't had a chance to pull out the old multimeter and test my trailer harness, But I'm assuming my plug is corroded and needs replaced. And i need to replace the one on the trailer too. I had started to why at the guys place, but i only had electrical tape, I', going to redo it with solder and heat shrink tube.
So my question is, should i just replace both ends with the standard 4 pin connectors? Or should I look to something different? I had the same problem on my 01 ranger's factory 4pin corroding as well, so is there one that handles the elements better?
Thanks for any advice
