How can I tell if OEM keyless entry will work?

How can I tell if OEM keyless entry will work?

I've had my truck since about 97 or 98 & I've tried aftermarket keyless entry gadgets attached to the power lock switch with limited success... ala the OEM theft system goes off everytime I open the door when unlocked with the aftermarket keyless remote.

While searching online for a new GEM, I saw some info that referenced with or without keyless entry, engine size, 4x4 / 4x2, etc.

This got me thinking.... how can I determine if my truck has what it needs (OEM) for an OEM keyless entry fob to work??

I have OEM power locks but I didn't get a key fob when I bought the truck way back then.

I remember seeing there's a sequence of key on/off to program new remotes here....

Is there some hidden code in the VIN that indicates the keyless entry option?
Is there any specific OEM key fob model I should look for?

Thanks

you would need to get the info from the dealer to find out if the OEM power door locks work with the little remote thingy...

If you have power locks try and program a stock remote.

Cycle the the key on off 8 times in 15 seconds. Gauges will do a full sweep. Press the lock and unlock buttons. Repeat for every remote you have.

At least that's the procedure used on my 99.

I tried the key on/off 5 times the other day (5x was the instructions I found for my 96, but I'll try the 8x too) and the locks cycled, so I'm guessing I should be ok to give it a try.

The stealership said any vehicle with OEM power locks can use a remote, but they also wanted $57.00 +tax for a remote.

Well, I took a chance & about $20 later I now have key-less entry!

As an added bonus when I unlock, the dome light comes on. Don't know if this the way all Rangers work or if it's due to the new GEM I had to install, but it's a nice addition.
This gives me an idea for another mod too.......

Just like some other newer Fords, when you hit lock first time, it locks doors (theft light comes on in cluster). When you hit lock 2nd time, it honks the horn (theft light also on). I haven't tried the panic button because the truck has been in the garage since it's been hovering around 10* at night.

Unfortunately, the headlights/turn signals don't blink so I have to look in the window to make sure the doors lock when I only hit the lock button one time.

Do any other year Rangers' headlights or turn signals blink when key-less locking?

When i bought my 99 is had a aftermarket one with my remote start. The lights blinked them. I now have reprogrammed a factory remote and the lights don't blink the dome light just comes on..

Parking lights and fogs blink when it honks the horn.

1st press locks the door, 2nd will provide you with an audible notification it locked the doors.

Doom light will come on and stay on for a minute or so.

Panic button will sound the horn and flash the p lights/fogs. It will do this for 2 minutes or till you cancel it.
