Front drive shaft...%$@#$%#

This thing has been so aggrevating! What you would normally think is a 5 minute job has been a real PITA! First the cage and ***** escaped there happy home, after fighting them for hours the finally gave up and decided to pop right in. Cool. So tonight I get under the truck to bolt the shaft in and its too long...so after a short battle I realize I don't have a driveshaft shortener in my tool box so I disassemble it and flip the center stator (or what ever its called) over and that makes it just short enough that I can get it into place with slight persuasion. Ok so far so good but(seems there is always a but) the transfer case end is not square with the flange. Now you would think that its basically a cv joint and should flex a little...nope nada nilch!!! The SOB stays square with the shaft and won't budge...anybody?

No I got the ujoint end, its the other end by the transfer case. Should the cv joint on that end swivel by hand?

yeah, i did the same thing. take it back apart, and keep trying different ways. before you get it completely back together make sure that it gimbals like it should. it took me quite a few tries. Trial and error is the only way i know.

yeah, looks like the same problem i had, but i didn't put it back under my truck until it was right. when you go to put it back together, don't try to line up the the ball cage with the outer race. actually stagger it a notch. if you look, two grooves are close together then a larger gap then the next two are close together. line the two close together groves in the race up with the two close together holes in the cage. it will go together a lot easier. oh yeah, all of the ***** go in somewhat at once.

I know what you mean I've had it apart a couple times. Like you said I will probably have to use trial and error to get it right. I won't get a chance to work on it again til saturday. Tommorrows the wifes b-day.

That end of the shaft should definitely swivel by hand. If its any harder than that I think you have a problem. It might be time to find a used shaft somewhere.

no he doesn't to get another shaft, he just needs to put it back together correctly.

did you take the joint apart or just open it up? there shouldn't be anything that would hold the ***** in the cage.
